Speech & Language Therapy Ideas: At the Beach 🏖️

Loved today’s sessions - lots of opportunities for communication: we worked on attention, listening, turn taking, vocabulary, auditory memory, problem solving and sentence building all through play 🌊

Today we used:

🤟 Makaton signs linked to the beach topic

🌊 Twinkl beach vocabulary mats for understanding and expressive language support

📚 Find Spot at the Beach and A Day at the Beach books – books are brilliant for building vocabulary, understanding and providing a visual for conversation

👜 “What Shall I Take to the Beach?” bag packing activity for decision making, answering questions and problem solving what we might (and might not!) need

🏖️ Beach Bingo for listening skills, attention and a little friendly competition

🏐 Beach themed Dobble for vocabulary, turn taking and language through interaction. The waterproof cards are brilliant for durability too!

🧠 “I Went to the Beach and I Brought…” memory game to develop listening, recall and auditory memory skills

🐠 Magnetic under the sea scene for listening, following directions and understanding positional language

Today’s sessions were all about friends and family 💛

Sharing a few simple speech and language therapy ideas you can try at home or in school:

• Visual word mats to build friends and family vocabulary
• Makaton signs for key family words
• Core symbol boards to model and support language
• A fun “gumball machine” game to practise talking about family members
• Sorting “good friend / not a good friend” scenarios (younger and older examples)
• Drawing and talking about special people (with questions at different levels)
• Asking each other questions to learn more about our families and practice our conversation skills

Families and friends are such an important topic. It helps children and young people talk about who is important to them and build connections with others 😊

A little look inside our clinic space 💛

We continue to offer home, nursery and school visits across the North West but we also have clinic appointments available in Chorley for families who prefer to come to us.

Clinic sessions can be a great option for a consistent, calm space to focus on communication.
