Men’s Health Week (15th – 21st June)
You might not know this, but the NHS offers a free screening to all men in the UK during the year they turn 65. This screening is an ultrasound which looks for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), which is where the walls of the aorta get weak and swell up. 1 in 92 men will have an AAA.
If an AAA gets too big it can burst, and chances of surviving this are less than 20%. They have no symptoms so screening is the only way to catch it – you can then be monitored and treated before it causes any problems.
Keep an eye out for your invitation in the post – screening could save your life!
If you are over 65 and have never been screened, contact Lancashire and South Cumbria AAA screening team on 0191 445 8747 to book an appointment at an NHS site near you.
Visit www.gatesheadhealth.nhs.uk/services/aaa/ for more information, and watch our AAA Video: https://fb.watch/7tORZvND2n/

It’s Men’s Health Week, and we want to tell you about an NHS screening programme which could save your life.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) are a weakening in the aorta (your main blood vessel) that can swell and rupture, causing fatal internal bleeding. They don’t have symptoms and are most common in men aged 65 and over. Screening involves a quick, pain-free ultrasound and is the only way to find an AAA.
If you are male, during the year you turn 65, you will receive a letter in the post inviting you to an appointment at an NHS site near you. If you need to rearrange, you can call Lancashire and South Cumbria AAA screening team on 0191 445 8747. You can also use this number to book an appointment if you are over 65 and have never been screened.
If you have a friend or relative who is male and aged 65 are over, just ask – Have you had your AAA screening yet?

This week (15th – 21st June) is Men’s Health Week, and we want to take the opportunity to talk about an NHS screening programme just for men.
When you turn 65, the NHS invites you for a simple scan to look for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA). This is where the walls of the aorta weaken with age and swell up, and is much more common in men than women. If you have one and it bursts, it is likely to be fatal. An AAA has no symptoms, so getting screened is the only way to find out if you have one.
Screening is a quick and pain free ultrasound, and you find out your results there and then. You will automatically receive your invitation in the post – please don’t ignore it! It could save your life.
If you are over 65 and have never been screened, you can still make an appointment by calling Lancashire and South Cumbria AAA screening team on 0191 445 8747. You can also call the number if you need to rearrange your appointment.
