Know Your Numbers Week, 7th–13th September

Know Your Numbers Week is the UK's biggest at-home blood pressure testing and awareness event and is run by Blood Pressure UK.

Around a third of people in the UK have high blood pressure, which can lead to serious medical problems such as heart attacks and strokes, but it has no symptoms, so the only way to know you have it is to get checked. High blood pressure can be treated with medication, and also by making healthier lifestyle choices, but this will only happen if you know your blood pressure numbers are high!

You can find out how to take your own blood pressure at home on their website where you can also find out how to donate, volunteer or fundraise for Blood Pressure UK.

Seasonal Flu Vaccines

The seasonal flu vaccine is now available to children aged 2-3yrs old, school aged children and pregnant patients.

Adults with a long-term health condition and those aged 65+ will be able to get the vaccine from 1st October.

The practice is only offering clinics to children this year. All eligible adults can have the vaccination at their preferred pharmacy by booking an appointment on the National Booking System (NBS) or telephoning 119. The vaccine remains free of charge to eligible patients.

Here's a guide to who is eligible, when, and where you can get vaccinated.

If you are also eligible for a covid vaccination, you will be able to book this at the pharmacy at the same time as your flu vaccine.

Vascular Disease Awareness Month, 1st–30th September

Vascular disease is the collective term for diseases of the veins and arteries, including things like varicose veins and arterial disease. It can affect every part of the body to which blood flows. It's just as common as cancer and heart disease, and accounts for 40% of deaths in the UK, many of which are preventable.

The Circulation Foundation charity want to encourage lots of fundraising activities all year round. Every September awareness month, they ask people to sign up for the Body Walk, where people walk, run, cycle or swim the 60,000 miles that make up the length of the human circulatory system. Exercise like this is important for a healthy circulatory system!

Blood Cancer Awareness Month, 1st–30th September

There are more than 100 types of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and Myeloma, and every year more than 40,000 people in the UK receive a diagnosis.

Blood cancer symptoms vary depending on the type of blood cancer, and not everyone will have the same symptoms. If you are worried, make an appointment to see a GP.

Blood cancers are the third biggest cancer killer in the UK, but it remains a hidden cancer, so Blood Cancer UK are asking all of us to raise awareness with family and friends and on social media.

Alopecia Awareness Month, 1st–30th September

Alopecia simply means ‘hair loss’. There are many different types of alopecia, and various medical conditions and side effects of treatments that can cause hair loss. Some of the most well-known include male or female pattern balding, chemotherapy, and the autoimmune condition ‘alopecia areata’ which causes sudden, patchy hair loss anywhere on the body, from small round patches to complete hair loss.

Alopecia Awareness Month aims to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of alopecia and highlight the significant emotional and psychological impact of the condition. It is also an opportunity to raise funds for research and support for the millions of people affected.

Is your child living with type 1 diabetes and getting ready for the new school year? ✏️

'My Type 1 Info' cards are perfect for students to carry with them in their pocket, school bag or diabetes kit. They can be personalised with information their school staff may need to know, including the technology they use, hypo treatments and why a child with type 1 may need access to a mobile phone.

Designed with the help of our Together Type 1 Young Leaders, the card aims to make conversations about diabetes with teachers and school staff easier, helping to reduce anxiety and answer common questions they may have.
