Demanding work asks a lot of us.

The pressure is real.
The deadlines are real.
The responsibility is real.

But so is the need to recover properly.

highperformance

And sometimes the most productive thing you can do is actually stop.

This is the world I live in too, which is why I created my work for busy lawyers, leaders and high-performing professionals who want to feel healthier, clearer and more energised while still doing demanding work well.

Not by pushing harder.

By learning how to work, recover and regulate in a way the body can actually sustain.

Healing is not always about learning something new.

Sometimes it is about remembering:

how to rest
how to breathe
how to feel safe
how to return to yourself again.

The body often remembers before the mind does.

5 signs your nervous system is under strain

You don’t need to be in full burnout for your nervous system to be overloaded.

Often, the signs appear much earlier especially in high-performing people who are used to functioning under pressure.

1. Persistent anxiety and racing thoughts

Even when the day is over, your mind keeps going. Replaying conversations. Anticipating problems. Mentally scanning what’s next.

2. Feeling emotionally overwhelmed or easily triggered

Things that normally wouldn’t affect you suddenly feel harder to hold.
Your patience shortens. Your reactions feel sharper.

3. Chronic fatigue and exhaustion

You’re still functioning but it’s taking far more effort than it used to.
Wired during the day. Depleted afterwards.

4. Trouble sleeping or switching off

You feel exhausted but mentally alert.
Your body is in bed, but your nervous system is still active.

5. Muscle tension or a body that feels constantly “on”

Tight neck & shoulders. Jaw tension. Shallow breathing. Headaches.
A body that struggles to fully relax.

Over time, nervous system strain can also begin showing up physically through lowered immunity, digestive issues, inflammation, hormonal disruption or flare-ups in existing health conditions.

This isn’t about weakness.

It’s about capacity.

Your nervous system influences how you think, feel, communicate, lead and recover under pressure.

Which one of these shows up most for you?

The reason most people avoid conflict
isn’t what you think.

It’s not lack of skill.

It’s not lack of confidence.

It’s that their system doesn’t feel safe
so it starts trying to get them back to what does feel safe.

I saw this clearly last week in a group training I was on in Wales

You can see it happen in real time:

-going quiet
-smoothing things over
-pushing harder
-disappearing altogether

Different patterns.

Same underlying driver.

This isn’t just behaviour.

It’s a nervous system response.

And if you can’t regulate yourself in the moment,

you will avoid it, escalate it, or try to control it.

That’s not leadership.

The people who navigate conflict well
are the ones who can stay present
when it matters.

Most people don’t reach out for support when things are falling apart....

They do it when they’re still functioning.

Still delivering.

Still meeting expectations.

But something has shifted.

Thinking feels heavier.

Decisions take longer.

The mental noise doesn’t really switch off.

There’s no crisis - just sustained pressure doing what it does over time.

That moment matters.

Because clarity doesn’t usually disappear suddenly.

It erodes quietly when cognitive load continues uninterrupted.

And that’s often when the right kind of support makes the biggest difference.

The feedback I hear most often isn’t dramatic.....

It’s usually some version of:

“I can think again.”

“I’m less reactive.”

“I’m making cleaner decisions.”

Not because anything external changed

but because there was finally space

to step out of cognitive overload.

This is the part most high-performing professionals underestimate.

Clarity doesn’t come from working harder.

It comes from interrupting pressure deliberately.

That’s the work.

Quiet. Practical. Effective.

Most professional mistakes don’t come from incompetence....

They come from cognitive overload.

After significant professional or personal shifts,

the system needs time to recalibrate.

If that pause doesn’t happen,

old patterns quietly still shape the new decisions.

So I created protected space this week.

No new inputs.

No reactive decisions.

Just time to think properly.

Not as “time off”

but scheduled in as “maintenance”.

This is how clarity is protected

when responsibility is high.

Clarity often arrives after

you stop pushing.

This year isn’t asking for reinvention.

It’s asking for release.

Not dramatic endings.

Not explanations.

Just putting down what no longer fits.

Pressure has a way of making us carry things longer than we should - roles, expectations, patterns that once served a purpose.

Clarity doesn’t always come from doing more.

Often, it comes from carrying less.

That’s the tone I’m setting for this year.

went quiet for a while.

Deliberately.

Christmas has a way of surfacing what we usually outrun.

Family dynamics.

Grief.

Old roles that no longer fit.

This Full Moon feels like a natural pause point

not to rush clarity

but to honour what’s integrated.

When something shifts internally,

the body needs time to catch up.

So instead of pushing forward,

I listened.

rested.

I let things settle.

This year isn’t going to be about forcing momentum.

It’s about moving from my truth.

And so I’m back, not louder, just more aligned.
