This week, during my DDP and PACE training, I've been reflecting on generational trauma and the impact it can have on our lives.

We often focus on behaviour without stopping to consider the experiences, relationships and coping strategies that may have shaped it.

What if we moved away from asking, "What's wrong with this person?" and became more curious about their story?

PACE encourages us to approach others with Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

As professionals, parents and human beings, I think we could all benefit from a little more curiosity and a little less judgement.

Sometimes understanding the story behind the behaviour is where real change begins.

What are your thoughts?

Today I completed further training in DDP, PACE and Train the Trainer approaches.

One thing that continues to stand out to me is how many behaviours we label as “challenging” are actually protective responses rooted in trauma, attachment difficulties, anxiety or feeling emotionally unsafe.

PACE focuses on Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

Not punishment.
Not shame.
Not control.

As both a psychotherapist and Registered Service Manager within supported accommodation, I’m passionate about creating environments where young people and adults feel emotionally safe enough to grow rather than simply “managed”.

Trauma informed practice matters.

The media, social media platforms, and even parts of society need to be held accountable for the way ADHD and other invisible disorders are being trivialised.

Awareness should never come at the cost of credibility for people genuinely struggling.

ADHD is recognised under the Equality Act for a reason. For many people it has a substantial and long term impact on daily functioning, education, employment, relationships, emotional regulation, and mental health.

Yet people are still mocked, dismissed, accused of laziness, or treated like they are jumping on a trend.

Leave people alone.

Nobody chooses to live with a brain that constantly races, struggles to switch off, forgets important things, becomes overwhelmed, burns out, or has to work twice as hard just to maintain what others see as “normal.”

ADHD also rarely comes alone. Many people are managing anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction struggles, sleep problems, or emotional dysregulation alongside it.

And to the women who have continued to work, study, raise children, build careers, and keep functioning while silently battling all of this behind the scenes:
you deserve recognition, not eye rolls.

Some of the strongest people are the ones fighting battles nobody can physically see.

New guidance on the safe use of mental health apps has been published, a welcome and timely step as more people turn to digital tools for support.

We welcome clear standards that will help protect users, strengthen data security and promote evidence-based care in a fast-growing market. However, safeguards must keep pace with innovation so people can trust the support they’re accessing.

Stress and trauma look different at every age.

In adults it may show up as rejection sensitivity, shutdown or dissociation.
In children it may show up as overwhelm, anger or tears.

Therapy is not about fixing.
It is about helping someone feel safer in their own nervous system.

That is where change begins.

Finding calm in natural surroundings.
