Know Your Numbers Week 🩺❤️

Do you know your blood pressure?

High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know is to have it checked. Knowing your numbers can help you take action early and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

What can affect your blood pressure?

🧂 Too much salt
🍷 Drinking too much alcohol
🚬 Smoking
⚖️ Being overweight
🏃 Not getting enough physical activity
😟 Long-term stress
😴 Poor or insufficient sleep
🧬 Age and family history can also play a part.

For more info:

Our information is written by our team of experts, and this section takes you through what your blood pressure readings mean, how high blood pressure can affect your body, what causes it and the steps you can take to lower it.

Did you know? Here's what you can expect from your hospital care.

When you're under the care of a hospital specialist, there are certain responsibilities that sit with the hospital team.

Your specialist should:
✔️ Answer questions about your care, even after you've left the hospital.
✔️ Request any tests you need and share the results with you.
✔️ Prescribe the first supply of any new medication they recommend (and provide it immediately if it's clinically urgent).
✔️ Issue fit notes for the condition they've treated.
✔️ Help with any appointment queries through their team.

You shouldn't be told to contact your GP about these responsibilities, as they are covered by the hospital's contract.

👶🎉 Expecting or recently welcomed another baby to your family? You might be expecting some things to be different, and the vaccine schedule for your baby is one thing that will be.

At the start of this year, the routine childhood vaccination schedule changed. Babies are now offered protection against chickenpox alongside measles, mumps and rubella through the introduction of the MMRV vaccine, which is already part of routine childhood vaccination programmes in several countries, including Canada, Australia and Germany.

🧑‍🍼💬 "But why make changes? Isn't chickenpox usually mild?"
While most children experience chickenpox as a mild illness, it can sometimes be more serious and require hospital treatment. In rare cases, it can lead to complications such as chest infections, seizures and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). The MMRV vaccine helps protect children against four serious diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox, while the introduction of the 18-month appointment will help provide them with protection at a younger age.

Feelings of anxiety could be related to a variety of things such as health, finances, work, or relationships.
It is also possible to feel anxious without knowing what is causing you to feel that way.

It is possible to recover from mental health problems, and lots of people do – especially after getting support.
There are many services in Northern Ireland that can provide mental health support.

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month 💜

You know your body better than anyone. Knowing what’s normal for you can help you spot when something changes.

Having these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have cancer, but it’s important to speak to your GP if you notice something that isn’t normal for you.

Know your body. Know the signs. Get checked. 💜
