✨️ You don't have to be a perfect parent this summer.

Today wasn't quite the summer's day I'd imagined. There was no fun-filled day out, no beautiful picnic and no exciting crafts.

Instead, there were big feelings, dysregulation and a child who needed me to help her regulate more than she needed entertainment.

So, as hard as it was, I let go of the pressure. We went for a walk to the shop, picked up some cake ingredients, walked home and baked banana bread together. It wasn't extravagant or fancy but it was enough.

Social media has a funny way of making us believe that everyone else is filling every day with adventures, spending lots of money, creating magical memories and somehow managing to stay on top of everything and it's important to remind ourselves that these are just snapshots.

Our children don't need perfect summers. They need safe adults who help them feel seen, loved and accepted. They need moments of connection far more than a calendar packed with activities.

If today was a "just get through the day" kind of day like ours, then that's ok. If dinner was beige, the house is a mess and you're counting down until bedtime, you are not failing. You're parenting and that's more than enough.

Hi everyone! I thought now would be a great time to reintroduce myself. 👋

I'm Heather, a Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Coach, helping children with big feelings build calm, confidence and emotional resilience.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent 13 years as a primary school teacher and I'm also mum to a wonderful neurodivergent daughter. Together, these experiences have given me a real understanding of the challenges children and families can face.

A few fun facts about me...

🎭 Theatre trips with my family are my absolute favourite thing to do.

🎶 I'm always singing and perform with a local choir and amateur dramatics society. (I also recently learned to roller skate again for one of our concerts 😅 🛼!)

🌳 I love being outdoors, especially walking in the woods.

😸 My two cats, Tinker and Skye, like to keep me on my toes (Skye even plays fetch, which never fails to make me laugh 😂!)

I believe that children can learn to manage big feelings in ways that feel natural and achievable. One of my favourite parts of my work is getting to witness children's amazing imaginations 💜. Therapy with children is so wonderful... It's creative, playful and effective.

If you'd like to find out whether I'm the right fit for your child, send me a message or visit the link in my bio. I'd love to chat 💫.

Thinking about therapy for your child this summer?

The summer holidays can be a great time to begin therapy, especially for children who struggle with big emotions.

Here are five reasons why summer can be the perfect time to start:

✨ More appointment flexibility

With schools finished for the summer, I can offer a wider range of appointment times, including weekday sessions before 4pm, making it easier to fit therapy around your family's summer plans.

✨ More emotional headspace

Many children feel more relaxed during the holidays. Without the daily pressures of school, homework and busy routines, they often have more energy and capacity to engage in therapy.

✨ Support for the back-to-school transition

If your child finds returning to school difficult, summer therapy can help them feel more prepared, confident and in control before the new term begins.

✨ Build confidence before challenges arise

Therapy doesn't have to wait until things reach crisis point. Summer is a great opportunity to help your child develop helpful tools, emotional resilience and self-confidence ahead of the new school year.

✨ Time to practise new skills

The school holidays provide opportunities to practise calming strategies and emotional regulation techniques in real-life situations, helping children embed what they learn in therapy.

If your child struggles with big emotions and you'd like to explore how therapy could help, I'd love to chat.

✨️ One thing I often hear from parents is that what they want most for their child is for them to be able to regulate their emotions better. And this is totally understandable because when children are struggling emotionally, it can be incredibly difficult for everyone involved.

While teaching children calming tools and techniques is important, it's also important to remember that children are not yet able to manage overwhelming emotions completely on their own. Their brains and nervous systems are still developing, which is why co-regulation with a safe, regulated adult matters so much.

One of the most powerful regulation tools a child can have is a calm and connected adult beside them. When we stay grounded and connect with them during their difficult moments, we help their nervous system feel safe enough to calm too. This is why I will always ask for your support in helping them to practise and apply any regulation techniques at home.

Over time, through connection and repetition, children can begin to access these regulation tools more independently, all because they experienced them with your support first.

✨️ You might wonder why I’m sitting on the floor in this photo (and as you can see, there are places to sit!)

This is a choice I often make when I'm working with children. Not because I don't find the sofa or chair comfortable but because it can help things feel a little more equal and a bit less formal.

I like to give children the choice... “Would you like to sit on the blue chair, the sofa or on the floor?” There’s no pressure or 'right' or 'wrong' answer. Just the autonomy to choose.

Offering simple choice is something you can expect to see in my sessions. Because for children with big emotions, the simplest of choices can begin to create a sense of steadiness. And most importantly, a sense of safety and trust.

And it's this sense of safety and trust that research shows can make the biggest difference in how helpful therapy feels for a child.

✨️ Messages like this.

I absolutely love receiving messages like this. There is something really special about hearing a young person recognise their own progress.

What people don't always realise is just how much of the change happens between sessions. It often occurs in the small moments, like trying something new or approaching something in a different way.

I often receive messages like this in between sessions and they are a beautiful reminder of the quiet but powerful shifts that are taking place for my clients 🤍.

If you're wondering whether therapy could help your child or young person, you're very welcome to get in touch for a free, confidential chat.

✨️ Parents often say to me, “I don’t really understand what’s going on… I just know something’s not quite right.” And that’s perfectly ok as most children don’t fully understand it either.

What I focus on in therapy isn’t just what is happening, but HOW it’s happening. The pattern beneath it all. This might be:

✨ What triggered it
✨ What their brain links it back to
✨ What they feel in that moment
✨ What they do with those feelings
✨ How and when things begin to settle
✨ And what they make it mean about themselves

Because when we break things down like this, we can start to see that it’s not random. It’s a cycle which can be gently interrupted.

And this is where the real change begins.

If you’d like to find out more, drop me a message. I’d love to hear from you.

✨️ One of the biggest worries parents share with me is, "What if my child won't talk or open up?"

As a parent myself, I totally understand this fear and the truth is, children don't need pressure to talk. What's most important is that they feel safe and this is where we start.

That's why I always take time to build trust, follow their lead and use creative, gentle approaches that make expressing feelings feel natural and comfortable.

And time and time again, I see children begin to open up in ways their parents didn't expect 💫.

I currently have one space available this month.

If you're wondering whether this kind of support could help your child, feel free to get in touch and we can arrange a free, informal chat.
