Millions of women in England are to be offered HPV self-testing kits as the new service rolls out from today.

The kits will be offered to those who haven’t attended cervical screening following previous invitations, providing a discreet and convenient way to test for high-risk HPV at home.

Type 1 Diabetes can develop quickly in both children and adults. Recognising the symptoms early can help prevent serious illness.

Look out for the 4 Ts:

🔹 Toilet – needing to wee more often than usual
🔹 Thirsty – feeling unusually thirsty all the time
🔹 Tired – persistent tiredness or lack of energy
🔹 Thinner – unexpected weight loss

Pregnancy is a time where families are busy planning for their precious new arrivals, and as part of the planning health professionals are reminding all expectant mothers about the importance of getting all their maternal vaccinations when offered. This currently, routinely includes:

· Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) offered from 28 weeks until birth

· whooping cough (pertussis) offered between 16 – 32 weeks

· Flu – any gestation of pregnancy

The RSV vaccine is particularly important to have now if your baby is due to be born during winter as this is when the virus is spreading rapidly and can cause serious lung infections (including pneumonia and bronchiolitis), which can make it difficult for babies to breathe and feed. These illnesses may need to be treated in hospital and could be life threatening.

My baby and me - when you have the RSV vaccine in pregnancy, the protection from the vaccine is passed to your baby. This means your baby is less likely to get severe RSV for the first six months after they're born.

Having the vaccine in week 28 or within a few weeks of this will help you build a good level of antibodies to pass on to your baby before birth. This will give your baby the best protection, including if they are born early.

Meet the Team: Ankush, Clinical Pharmacist and Independent Prescriber 💊

You may not have met your practice pharmacist, but there is a good chance they have already been involved in your care.

Ankush is a Clinical Pharmacist and Independent Prescriber working at Long Lane Surgery as part of the wider North West Leicestershire GP Federation team. He has spent 3 years working in general practice, with a particular interest in heart health, blood pressure, blood thinning medication and kidney health. 🫀

Clinical pharmacists work alongside your GP. Much of our work happens behind the scenes: reviewing long term medication, acting on hospital letters and discharge summaries, responding to national medicines safety alerts, sorting out supply problems, and making sure your repeat prescriptions remain safe and up to date.

They also run booked clinics and structured medication reviews, and they may contact you directly if something needs looking at.

If you have a concern about your medicines, you are welcome to ask the surgery about a review with the pharmacy team. 📞

It is also worth remembering that your local community pharmacy is there for you, usually without an appointment. They can advise on minor illness, side effects, over the counter treatments and how to take your medication, and under the Pharmacy First service they can treat a number of common conditions and supply prescription medicines where appropriate. For many everyday questions they are the quickest place to get help.

🧪 DID YOU KNOW? – About Your Samples

We process hundreds of blood and urine samples every week at the surgery!

To help everything run smoothly (and get your results back safely):

✅ Always bring your sample in the right container
Ask reception for a pot – please don’t use jam jars or old containers.

✅ Label it clearly
Make sure your name, date of birth and date of sample are on the pot and/or form.

✅ Only bring samples we’ve asked for
We can’t send “just in case” samples to the lab – they must be requested by a clinician.

✅ Drop them off on time
Labs have strict collection times. Late samples may not be processed and could mean repeating the test.
This all helps us avoid delays, reduce waste, and keep the lab (and your GP) happy – so you get your results as quickly and safely as possible 💙

Tips on keeping your home cool

Hot weather can be more than just uncomfortable — it can affect your health, especially if you’re vulnerable.

But there are simple things you can do to stay cool and safe at home.

It sounds obvious, but these steps are easy to overlook when the heat hits:

🌡️ Shade or cover your windows where you can

🪟 Open windows when it's cooler outside (like at night) to get air flowing through your home

🌀 Use a fan if it's below 35°C — but don't point it directly at your body as this can cause dehydration

💡 Turn off lights and unused electrical equipment, and try cooking at cooler times of the day
