Top Tip Tuesday 😊
Did you know Sing-song speech, such as nursery rhymes and simple songs, has been shown to play an important role in helping babies learn language! Recent research showed a fascinating insight into how little ones develop their early communication skills, and it beautifully supports everything we do in Sing and Sign, right from our tiniest Babes course up to our toddlers. 🥰

Scientists from the University of Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin have found that in the earliest months, babies learn language mainly through rhythm, not individual speech sounds. They measured babies’ brain waves and discovered that young infants don’t reliably process separate phonetic sounds until around seven months old - even though many can already recognise familiar words! Their findings suggest that rhythm provides the foundation for language, with phonetic details gradually layered in over time. 😊

What does this mean for you and your baby?
The researchers’ advice is simple and reassuring:

“Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible or use infant-directed speech like nursery rhymes because it will make a difference to language outcome.” 🎶🥰

If you’d like to read more about this exciting research, take a look at the links below.

Tuesday’s Top Tip 😊… Trust the process!

Babies need time to recognise and understand gestures and signs - just as they do with spoken language. The secret is consistency. When signing becomes part of your everyday routine, it becomes a habit and a natural part of the way you communicate together.

Think about waving 🤗. It’s often the very first gesture babies learn, and that’s no surprise. They see it frequently used by everyone around them, it’s fun, and it always gets a lovely reaction 🥰.

The same principle applies to other meaningful gestures and signs. Choose the ones that matter most to your baby - milk, more, finished, bath, music - and use them consistently and regularly. Over time, their understanding grows… and those magical first signs will begin to appear.

Trust the process. Keep showing, keep modelling, and keep enjoying signing together 🥰.

This week at Sing and Sign West Cumbria...

Our Babes families have been exploring "taking turns" in their classes. We talk about how the use of Sing & Sign songs gives babies a very strong pattern to spot and in turn the babies start recognising opportunities to take turns within an early conversation.

Our Stage 1s have focused on recapping all the amazing signs they have learned this term. Having learned over 100 signs this term, we have armed our babies with so many signs to help talk to us about what they love!

Our Stage 2s have been having fun with speech sounds and recapping their favourite songs from Sing and Sign.

Are you interested in joining us? Have you heard from some of our families how invaluable signing is to your daily routines? We still have limited spaces available in our courses for the Autumn term. Take a look at our booking page and book your course space here;

Tuesday’s Top Tip 😁… Silence! 🤫 We’re not scared of it in our Sing and Sign classes and you shouldn’t be either! In fact, little pauses can be a fun way to help your baby or toddler develop their listening and conversation skills.

😊 Try stopping for a small pause during a song or game just before something exciting happens! You can do it at any age - here are some examples we love….

👶 For the youngest babies, try adding little pauses in songs like “Where is the Noise?”, “Tickle on Your Tum” and “Can You Play at Peekaboo”

🧒 For slightly older babies, we love pausing during “Old MacDonald”, “Walking in the Jungle” or “Looking Through the Window” - perfect for building the drama and listening out for all those funny animal and vehicle noises! 🐷🦁🚂

👧 For lively toddlers, have fun with little silences during “Walk and Stop” or “We Can Play the Instruments” 👣🪇

…and of course, at any age, we LOVE pausing and listening out for Jessie Cat during a game of peekaboo! 🐾 Meow!

So why not give it a try this week - add a little pause where you normally wouldn’t and see how it captures your baby’s attention. 🥰

This week at Sing and Sign West Cumbria...

Our Babes families have been exploring "sounds and babble" in their classes. We talk about the importance of us using sounds and babble with our babies and how this helps model how the different positions of your mouth and tongue make different sounds. All vital steps to help your baby make their voice heard!

Our Stage 1s have focused on "bedtime" and all the useful signs for that key part in their daily routine, such as "story", "brush teeth" and "upstairs". All fantastic signs to help provide consistency in their routine and help make bedtime a calmer experience for all.

Our Stage 2s have been continuing their introduction to phonics by looking at the sounds Q-Z. As part of our surprise bag we play with initial sounds of props to encourage listening for sounds that make up words.

Are you interested in joining us? Have you heard from some of our families how invaluable signing is to your daily routines? We still have spaces in some of our venues for the Autumn term, book your course space here;
