☀️ HOT WEATHER REMINDER ☀️
🌿 Looking After Yourself
The warmer weather can be lovely, but it’s important to take care of yourself too.
💧 Stay hydrated throughout the day – don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.
🏃♀️ If you’re exercising, walking, running, or doing outside jobs, try to do the more strenuous tasks during the cooler parts of the day.
🧴 Apply sunscreen regularly and don’t forget easy-to-miss areas such as your ears, neck and tops of your feet.
👕 Wear light, loose-fitting clothing that allows your body to stay cool.
🧢 A hat and sunglasses can help protect you from the sun.
🌳 Take regular breaks in the shade where possible.
🐴 Looking After Your Horse
💧 Ensure your horse has access to plenty of fresh, clean water at all times.
🥣 Offering a watery mash can be a great way to increase fluid intake.
⚡ Electrolytes may be beneficial for some horses, but always offer plain water alongside electrolyte water.
🏇 Consider exercising during the cooler parts of the day and adjust workloads if needed.
🌳 Whether your horse is happier in or out will depend on the individual horse, the shade available, flies, airflow and what they’re accustomed to. Observe your horse and make decisions based on their comfort.
🪰 Fly rugs can be excellent for protecting against biting insects, but remember they can also increase heat underneath, so check regularly that your horse is comfortable.
The key message for both people and horses is simple: stay cool, stay hydrated, and don’t be afraid to adjust your plans to suit the conditions. ☀️💙
