JWW Allison & Sons is a long-standing independent pharmacy that has been in its premises on Cockermouths Main Street for over 200 years, widely known as Allisons or Allisons Chemist. 🎓 NEW NHS MENINGITIS B VACCINATION SERVICE
COMING SOON TO ALLISON’S CHEMIST

We are pleased to announce that from 20th July 2026, Allison’s Chemist will be offering the new NHS Meningitis B (MenB) vaccination service. This will be dependent on approval by the NHS and us being sent vaccine. Once these things are finalised we will be able to add appointments to the national booking system and advise patients how to book.

I am going on holiday a few days after the service starts, so we will hopefully get started before I go and pick the service back up on my return.

Meningitis B is a serious infection that can cause meningitis and sepsis (blood poisoning). Young people starting university or residential further education are at increased risk, particularly those living in halls of residence or shared accommodation.

You may be eligible for a FREE NHS MenB vaccination if you are:

✅ Aged 17 or 18 (born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008)

OR

✅ Aged under 25 and starting undergraduate higher education for the first time in Autumn 2026

OR

✅ Aged under 25 and moving into residential further education accommodation for the first time in Autumn 2026

The vaccine course consists of 2 doses given at least 28 days apart, so we encourage eligible students to start the course before beginning their studies.

Our travel clinic is as busy as ever, with patients travelling all over the world for both work and leisure.

Towards the end of next month I will be going on holiday for a few weeks myself, and this means that the clinic will be closed for about three weeks.

This may seem a way off, but some vaccines such as Rabies require more than one dose over a few weeks. So I’m making this post as someone who has received desperate phone calls in the pharmacy or even worse, desperate emails whilst I’m on my own holiday!

So if this applies to you then please give us a call to make your appointment.

Good morning,

We continue to receive good feedback about the email service that we have been using so feel free to get in touch and register for that. The NHS App should also show when your prescription is ready if you have that.

This works well for patients as you’re not wasting your time searching for prescriptions. Our turnaround is pretty fast at present, but it is important to remember that we can only start working on your prescription when it arrives with us. And this isn’t always as soon as patients think so we’d recommend ordering when you have a week or slightly more left.

Ideally each adult patient should have their own email address registered so you know who the alert is for, but if only one person uses email then that email address is fine. Please make sure that you have permission to receive alerts for another adult before registering.

We will never bombard you with emails, but the system also has the ability to notify patients when things like flu jabs are due etc. which may come in handy later in the year.

Either email the address below or ask whilst you’re in the pharmacy and we will add your email address and activate notifications.

Over the past month or so, we’ve seen an increase in the number of women making an appointment to use our NHS contraception service.

This service is free, confidential and convenient and the records are shared with your GP practice so go into your medical records just as if you’d received a prescription.

Patients have commented on how straightforward it is and how much hassle it has saved them.

Good morning,

Every day we are being asked by patients, how they can get their prescriptions to come to us. I guess not many pharmacies periodically offer free well-loved furniture to the first person to send them a message!

Thanks to the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) it is now much easier to do this. You can change your nomination via the NHS App, your online NHS account or by letting us or your GP know which pharmacy you would like to use.

This is completely up to you and nobody should change your nominated pharmacy without your consent.

If your prescriptions are already successfully coming to us then you don’t need to do anything.

But if you’d like to join us, for whatever reason then please follow the advice above and we can help you if you face any problems nominating us.

If you do come in for us to change your nomination then please bring a note with your full name, address, date of birth and surgery. If you also have your NHS number then you will immediately become a favourite!

Please note that this week we have not received many of our prescriptions for the week until yesterday evening. There’s nothing we can do about that, so please be patient if you’re looking for yours today or early next week.

**MENINGITIS B VACCINE**

Just a reminder that we have vaccine in stock to administer second doses. We definitely haven’t seen everyone back in who received a first dose over a month ago. To be adequately protected in the long-term, two doses need to be received, not just one.

The second dose needs to be at least a month after the first, so please make sure that this is the case before calling to make an appointment.

If there is some extra vaccine then we will hopefully be able to administer a few first doses for those who missed out first time around. Please be aware that this is a private service.
