✨ 4 years of Aurora Children’s Therapy Ltd! ✨

Four years ago, I took the leap and started ACT with a vision of creating a service where children and young people are truly understood, families feel listened to and supported, and therapy is completely individual to the child.

Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with so many incredible children, young people and families — and I’m so grateful to every single person who has trusted me to be part of their journey.

To the families who recommend me to others, the new clients who trust me to assess and support their children, the schools and professionals I work alongside, and the Local Authorities who continue to commission my services — thank you. Your trust in me and in Aurora means more than I can say.

I’ve built and run Aurora independently over these four years, wearing just about every hat imaginable behind the scenes! It hasn’t always been easy, but watching this little business grow into what it is today makes every late night, challenge and leap of faith worth it.

And the most exciting part is that I still feel like Aurora is only just getting started.

I have some very big dreams for where I want to take Aurora in the future, and I’m so excited to see what the next few years bring.

For now, I’m just incredibly grateful.

Many of the children and families I work with face significant barriers to accessing education. While inclusion should always be the goal, true inclusion means recognising that one approach does not fit every child.

For some children, attending a school environment can result in overwhelming sensory demands, heightened anxiety, chronic stress, and a nervous system that remains in a constant state of fight, flight, or freeze. Simply being present in a classroom does not always mean a child is able to learn, participate, or thrive.

As occupational therapists, we understand that meaningful participation happens when a child's environment, sensory needs, and functional abilities are understood and supported. For a small but highly vulnerable group of children and young people, alternative educational provision such as EOTAS/EOTISC can be essential in ensuring they receive an education in a way that is safe, appropriate, and accessible.

I am sharing this petition on behalf of a parent to help raise awareness of concerns around proposed SEND reforms and the potential impact on children who cannot safely access a traditional school setting.

Every child deserves access to education that meets their individual needs.

In any SEND reforms, maintain the legal right to education other than in school for children & young people whose needs mean no school or college placement is appropriate. Retain the SEND Tribunal’s power to order EOTISC and specify the provision required for a child’s individually assessed needs.

Word of mouth is so important to a small business, and receiving feedback like this means more than I can put into words. 💛

I have been trying to understand my daughter's needs fully for a while. I could see she was having some difficulties and I looked into different ways of supporting her. Referrals where being bounced back, my daughter's school weren't observing much (she does mask significantly for a time) and it started to feel like quite an exhausting journey of battling for my daughter to be seen, heard and understood. She is 6.

Islay came highly recommended through a friend, and now I can totally see why.

Islay’s communication with me was always thorough, accurate, and understanding. She was able to travel to my house so she could see my daughter relaxed in her own environment which I think really improves the assessment.

My daughter was high energy with excitement to meet Islay, who my daughter warmed to immediately. She was warm, kind, considerate and completely understanding.

She carried out a thorough assessment, all whilst supporting an excitable, bouncy 6 year old. Islay assessed so much and observed so much in my daughter. I was really impressed with how much she was observing all whilst engaging with my daughter and her high energy.

Islay completed the assessment really promptly, recognising how valuable it would be to start the new school year with. I felt Islay was so child focused and wanting to support my daughter fully.

The sensory assessment was so informative. I believe it will be a very valuable resource for myself, which will massively support my daughter, but a huge resource to the school also.

I really can not recommend Islay enough. I think Islays assessment will shift so much for my daughter, in which I am incredibly grateful for.

The system is hard to navigate and quite frankly battle. Islay was an absolute breath of fresh air

Exciting News! 🎉

Introducing Everyman's new Relaxed Screenings! 💙

We are thrilled to announce that Everyman are launching sensory-friendly, relaxed screenings designed to be inclusive and comfortable for everyone, including individuals with autism.

🎬 Kick-off Screenings: Toy Story 5 🤠🚀
📅 When: Sunday, June 28th & Monday, June 29th
⏰ Time: 09:00 AM sharp (No trailers, no adverts!)
🔁 Frequency: At least once a month moving forward!

We’ve made several adjustments to ensure a stress-free and magical cinema experience:

🍿 Inside the Screen:

Sensory-Friendly: Lower sound levels (4.5 or less) and house lights kept on low.

Freedom to Move: Guests are welcome to switch seats, bring their own food/drink, and use phones or sensory toys.

Proactive Care: Their team will do regular checks and provide warnings for any sudden changes, strobe lights, or loud scenes.

🏢 Around the Cinema:

Clear signage and a friendly team ready to guide you.

Hand-dryers in the bathrooms will be turned off (replaced with paper towels) to reduce loud noises.

Popcorn pre-popped before arrival to keep the foyer quiet and calm.

Celebrating our new Nature Play Practitioner ☀️🌳🌺🌻 😍

I’m so pleased to celebrate Islay Adams, a fellow paediatric OT in Essex, who has now completed my Play the Nature Way training 🎉

Islay has really taken the approach on board and is already planning how she can bring it into the forest school setting she works with which feels like such a great fit for this way of working

Play the Nature Way® is all about taking developmental sensory rich child led play outdoors into real environments where children can move explore regulate and develop through meaningful experience in nature, as well as brining more nature play indoors!

It’s rooted in the idea that some of the most powerful therapy doesn’t need to happen at a table or in a clinic room, and that when we connect to nature and the outdoors we connect to so many ways to develop our brains and bodies.

What I really enjoy seeing is when practitioners take the principles and start shaping them into their own practice straight away not just understanding the ideas but actually using them in real spaces with real children

I’m looking forward to seeing how Islay develops this within her forest school setting and the opportunities it will create for the children she works with 💖
