🦴 Is spinal surgery dangerous?

This is a question I’m asked very often — and the honest answer is yes, spinal surgery does carry risks.

But so does flying in an aeroplane.

What makes flying safe isn’t the absence of risk — it’s the systems, training, checks, and precautions designed to minimise that risk as much as possible.

Spinal surgery is no different.

As a spinal surgeon, I know that every procedure carries potential complications. That’s why:
✔ Every patient is carefully assessed
✔ Surgery is offered only when the benefits outweigh the risks
✔ Detailed planning, imaging, and safety protocols are followed
✔ The aim is always the best possible outcome with the lowest possible risk

Despite all precautions, not every patient will have a perfect result — and it’s important to be honest about that. Surgery is never a guarantee, but for the right patient, it can be life-changing.

👉 The key is seeing a trained and experienced spinal surgeon who can clearly explain:
• The risks
• The benefits
• The alternatives
• And whether surgery is truly the right option for you

Informed decisions lead to safer care.
