Roxanne Angelique Independent Civil Celebrant My name is Roxanne Angelique Cawdron and I am an independent Civil Celebrant based in Essex.

Fully qualified and insured Independent Civil Celebrant specialising in bringing light to your story in life's biggest moments - from touching funeral services through to weddings, renewals, child and family ceremonies. I have been professionally trained and accredited in in two level 3 Diplomas (DipFC and DipCC)
I specialise in writing and delivering unique and personal ceremonies to mark life's biggest moments - so everything from funeral services through to weddings, renewals and baby/child/family ceremonies - and I have conducted hundreds of beautiful and poignant ceremonies over the years. I'm very openly passionate about what I do and pride myself on the relationship I build with my clients - after all, I can't write a reflective and appropriate ceremony for you if I'm not familiar with who you are! My bespoke ceremonies are crafted individually for the people they are intended for - there is no set format, no templates, and no standard expectation, but rather I give ownership of these special occasions back to my clients where they have complete freedom to create a moment in time that is wholly suitable and appropriate for them. It's a beautiful process, and one I'm honoured to partake in every single day.

Many of the words used in death care have their origin in religion, clinical settings or traditions that have since evolved.

But as we move toward more human-centered and compassionate services, the words we use need to evolve too.

Language is more than just words: it’s how we create space for the bereaved, and express care for the people who have died.

Expanding our vocabulary can make a huge difference in how people feel supported and seen.

Here are 10 suggested changes:

✨Funeral industry ➡️ Death care community
✨Deceased / Loved one ➡️ The person who has died / [name]
✨ Viewing ➡️ Visiting / Private time with [name]
✨ Chapel ➡️ Gathering space / Ceremony hall
✨ Mourners ➡️ Family and friends/ Attendees /Guests
✨ Pallbearers ➡️Coffin bearers / Guardians
✨ Order of service ➡️ Ceremony guide / Tribute booklet
✨ Eulogy ➡️ Life story / Reflections on [name’s] life
✨ Committal ➡️ Farewell / Parting
✨ Disposal ➡️ Final disposition / Final state

Which suggestions resonate most with you? Or do you prefer the traditional words?

Language is very personal. The idea is not to get rid of traditional words but to expand our vocabulary to meet people where they are.
