Chronic pain is not... 💛

All in your head 🧠
The same as acute pain 🔄
You being lazy 🚫
The same for everyone 👥
You not getting a grip ❌
A sign of weakness 💪
Predictable 🌧️
Chronic pain is complex.

It can be influenced by the nervous system, stress, sleep, previous injury, emotions, movement habits, health, and life load - but that does not make it imaginary. 🧩

It is real, it is individual, and it does not always follow a simple or linear pattern. 📉📈

Two people can have the same scan, the same diagnosis, or the same injury history and still have completely different pain experiences. 🤍

That is why chronic pain needs more than "just push through it" or "just rest."
It needs understanding, support, and a plan that makes sense for the person in front of you. 🌿

Pain is real, even when it is persistent, complicated, or hard to explain. ✨

Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis—it’s a description of nerve pain.

Many people use the word sciatica when pain travels from the lower back or glute down the leg. But that only tells us what you’re feeling, not why it’s happening.

The sciatic nerve can become irritated for many different reasons, including:
• A disc issue
• Narrowing around a nerve
• Inflammation
• Other structures affecting the nerve

This is why two people with “sciatica” can have completely different underlying problems—and need completely different treatment.

The real question isn’t:
❌ “Is it sciatica?”

It’s:
✅ “What’s causing the nerve pain?”

If you’re experiencing shooting, burning, tingling, or pain that travels down your leg, don’t settle for a label. A proper assessment can identify what’s actually driving your symptoms and guide the right treatment.

Sciatica describes the symptom—not the diagnosis.

Save this post for later and share it with someone who thinks sciatica is a diagnosis.

96% of patients found osteopathic care effective and were satisfied with their care.

That is a powerful reminder of what good osteopathic care should aim to provide: not just symptom relief, but care that patients feel listened to, understood, and supported by.

Research carried out in the UK found high levels of patient satisfaction with osteopathic treatment, with many patients reporting that their care was effective.

Why might that matter?

Because when it comes to pain, injury, and movement problems, people want more than a quick fix. They want:

A clear explanation of what may be contributing to their symptoms
Hands-on care where appropriate
Practical advice they can use outside the treatment room
A plan that supports confidence, movement, and recovery
Osteopathic care is centred around understanding the person, not just the painful area.

If pain is affecting how you move, work, sleep, or exercise, getting the right support can make a real difference.

Feel heard. Move better. Get back to doing what matters.

How does a spinal disc get nutrition if it has no blood supply?

Intervertebral discs are mostly avascular, meaning they don’t have a direct blood supply.

Instead, they rely on diffusion. Nutrients like oxygen and glucose pass from small blood vessels in the nearby vertebrae, across the cartilaginous endplates, and into the disc.

Waste products such as lactate then diffuse back out the same way.

Movement is a key part of this process.
As the spine loads and unloads during everyday activity, fluid shifts in and out of the disc - helping bring nutrients in and carry waste out.

So although discs don’t have their own blood vessels, they stay alive through diffusion and normal spinal movement.

📍Back pain isn't all the same - and the type matters in how we calm it down & manage it.

📍That dull ache after a workout? Not the same as sharp pain bending forward, pain that flares when you twist, or nerve pain shooting down the leg.

👍Here are 4 common types of back pain:

1️⃣. Disc pain 🥲
Usually felt deep in the lower back and can worsen with bending, sitting, coughing, or lifting. It may feel sharp, intense, some patients describe it as catching.

2️⃣. Facet joint pain 🤕
This comes from the small joints in the spine. It often feels more one-sided, stiff, or achy, and may worsen with twisting, leaning back, or standing too long. Patients describe it as a sharp pinching sensation.

3️⃣. Muscular pain 💪
Often comes from overuse, poor posture, stress, or sudden movement. This type usually feels sore, tight, tender, or crampy and is often easier to pinpoint.

4️⃣. Sciatica ⚡
Sciatica is nerve-related pain that travels from the lower back or glute down the leg. It may feel sharp, burning, electric, or tingling, and can come with numbness or weakness.

❓Why this matters:
Different pain patterns often point to different structures - and that changes what helps.

If your pain is persistent, worsening, or travelling down the leg, get it properly assessed.
