💙 WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS DURING A COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY SESSION?

If you’ve never experienced colonic hydrotherapy before, you may understandably wonder what actually happens during a treatment.

Your appointment with an ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist begins with a thorough consultation, discussing your medical history, medications, bowel habits, diet and lifestyle, as well as checking that treatment is appropriate for you.

You’ll then be given privacy to prepare.

During a closed-system colonic, a small, single-use sterile speculum is gently inserted into the re**um and connected to the treatment equipment.

💧 Warm, body-temperature water is introduced gradually at low pressure. Water and waste leave through the closed system, designed to provide a hygienic and odour-free treatment.

Your therapist stays with you throughout and may use gentle abdominal massage to support relaxation and natural bowel movement.

Your privacy, dignity and comfort should always be respected, and your therapist will explain what’s happening throughout the session.

Afterwards, you’ll have privacy to use the toilet and get dressed before receiving any appropriate aftercare advice.

🚫 MYTH MONDAY

“If I open my bowels regularly, I can’t be constipated.”

❌ MYTH

Constipation isn’t only about how often you open your bowels.

You may go every day and still experience constipation if your stools are hard or difficult to pass, you regularly need to strain, or you frequently feel that you haven’t completely emptied your bowel.

Other signs can include spending a long time on the toilet or needing to make repeated attempts to pass a stool.

That’s why, when looking at bowel health, frequency is only part of the picture. Stool consistency, ease of passing and the feeling of complete evacuation are important too.

Some people choose colonic hydrotherapy as part of their wider approach to digestive wellbeing. An ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist will take time to discuss your bowel habits, diet, hydration, lifestyle and medical history before deciding whether treatment is appropriate for you.

From my experience as a therapist of over 11 years it is rarely food intolerances that are the main issue.

They simply are one of the symptoms of a struggling digestive system and within reason the foods can be introduced slowly once treatments have calmed and re-set the system.

Not always an instant fix but a long term one ☝️

Before assuming you have a food sensitivity… consider the bigger picture.

When digestive symptoms arise, it can be natural to focus solely on the food itself. But sometimes supporting digestive wellbeing involves looking beyond what we eat and also considering how we eat and the environment in which digestion takes place.

Digestive symptoms are not always simply a question of whether the body can tolerate a particular food.

Other factors that may influence digestive comfort can include:

• Gut motility and how food moves through the digestive system
• Stress levels and nervous system regulation
• Visceral sensitivity (how sensitive the digestive tract is to normal digestive activity)
• Eating speed and chewing habits
• Meal size and meal timing
• Fibre balance and individual tolerance
• Hydration
• Sleep quality, routines and overall wellbeing

This does not mean food sensitivities or intolerances are not real — for some individuals they absolutely can be an important consideration.

However, before removing multiple foods or becoming anxious around eating, it may be helpful to pause and ask:

• How am I eating?
• Am I rushing meals?
• How are my stress levels?
• Am I drinking enough fluid?
• Am I eating the right balance of fibre for my own needs?
• Am I supporting good sleep and daily routines?

Sometimes creating a supportive digestive environment and taking a whole-person approach can be just as important as focusing on the food itself.
