We're given the ability to cry for a reason.

πŸ’œ I heard this described recently in a way I really liked. If you cut yourself, you will bleed as you know. One of the reasons you bleed is because it washes any foreign bodies out of the wound as the blood comes out. So your body will allow you to bleed for a short period of time, then it forms a scab and stops it.

✨ Crying is like that but for your soul.

πŸ’œ So when your soul is wounded, crying lets that out. It gets rid of all that horribleness that's in there and cleans you. That's what crying is for. It's there as a release.

πŸ“Œ If you've never been allowed to cry properly, you may not know that you'll stop. You'll start crying, and you might cry for hours. You may sob heartrendingly to the point where you can't breathe, but it will pass.

πŸ’œ People who've always swallowed their tears and repressed the urge to cry sometimes fear that if they start crying they will never stop.

πŸ’œ You will. It may take you a little while, but you will stop crying because that's what crying does. It gets the emotion out that's prompting you to cry, a bit like emptying a bucket. When the bucket is empty you can't empty it any more. That's what crying is for, it's emptying that emotional bucket. So if you're a person who doesn't cry, please let yourself.

Quite often when we're small, if we start to cry then our parents will try to stop us.

πŸ’œ That might be from a place of love because nobody likes to see someone they care about crying, or it might be from frustration, depending on the circumstances.

πŸ’œ You hear people say things like 'Oh cheer up, there's nothing to cry about'.

πŸ’œ Or conversely, 'stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about.' Both of which are very unhelpful. If there was nothing to cry about you wouldn't be crying. So it's belittling, it's not true, and it's unhelpful and what it tells us as small children is that crying is not ok.

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ So we don't cry. As we get older, circumstances arise where we should cry because we're upset, angry, we're frightened, and we don't. We swallow it, we repress that feeling.

πŸ’œ I see this in clinic all the time. Clients come in and they're talking about really upsetting things. Their eyes will fill with tears and they'll do this - they'll sniff and that's it, it's gone.

πŸ€” Why don't they sob their heart out? Because what they're telling me is heartrending. I would cry.

πŸ“Œ So please do cry when you feel the need. It's very, very healthy.

Let's talk about crying 😒

πŸ€” When did you last cry? It might have been yesterday, it might have been 10 minutes ago, it might have been when you were four.

✨ Why does it matter? Well the thing is, crying is given to us for a reason. Like all our emotions and all our bodily functions they have a purpose.

πŸ’œ When you're in a situation where that purpose should be fulfilled, then the appropriate thing to do is to let it. But crying, like being angry, it's one of those things that's kind of not ok, is it?

πŸ’œ Particularly if you're a woman, in a workplace - 'well it's not very professional'. If a woman bursts into tears in the workplace either she's pre-menstrual or she's just some kind of floopie idiot.

πŸ’œ So most of us repress any urge to cry that we have, particularly in the workplace. Now that's not entirely a bad thing. We don't necessarily want everyone sobbing their hearts out in the middle of the office or the shop.

πŸ’œ But that belief ends up leaking out into all other areas of our lives. So we don't just not cry at work, we don't cry at all.

πŸ’œ Again - this is perhaps slightly more stereotypical now than it used to be - boys don't cry. Big boys don't cry. So men often feel that if they cry it's because they're weak and pathetic. Nobody wants to feel like that so they don't do it.

✨ Come back tomorrow for more on crying and why it is actually a good thing to do.

Emotional therapeutic counselling is suitable for a wide variety of emotional issues.

πŸ’œ Some clients know that they need help with, for example self-esteem or depression, others aren't really sure what their issues are but know they aren't happy or have difficulties coping in certain situations.

πŸ’œ I don't specifically offer support with addiction management or work with those actively using alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism. However if you are interested in working with me then I'd be happy to meet you for a free, no obligation introductory session to find out more about you and what you need.

πŸ’œ If I don't feel I'm the therapist for you then I will try to refer you to someone else who may be more suitable for your particular requirements. I also offer a specialist insomnia treatment.

πŸ—“ If you would like to book some emotional or physical therapy, or have any questions, you can get in touch via email at [email protected] or phone 07974 203480

Physical space and emotional space are not necessarily the same thing.

✨ If you are an introvert like me then you probably like being by yourself and it's important to you to have time by yourself sometimes.

✨ If you're an extrovert then you want to be in a big group so it's not so important for you to have time by yourself, but you might still want it some of the time. Just because you're normally the life and soul of the party doesn't mean you have to be every single time. But the more you are inclined to be the life and soul of the party the more people are going to struggle to understand if if you do need to be by yourself for a little while. So you need to be able to explain that to people.

πŸ“Œ If emotional space and physical space are different, so it's not enough to just be emotionally on your own, say with headphones on, you have to be physically separate from other humans, you need to explain that as well.

✨ If you're with people who don't think like that and you're trying to shut yourself away, they're going to think you're sulking or not speaking to them or something, and they're going to be either upset or concerned. Far from leaving you on your own they're going to be saying 'What's the matter? Come and talk to me!' and really annoying you because you need to be by yourself.

✨ So you need to know how much emotional space you need and how much physical space you need, and you need to explain to your companion humans how that is and have some way of showing that you need to be by yourself occasionally, and that this is one of those times. OR that you need to be in a group, so actually 'much as I love you, there's only three of you, it's not enough, I need to go out and have a party. It's not because I don't want to spend time with you, and it's not because I'm having an affair, it's because I need to be in a big group of people right now. Three people isn't big enough.'

πŸ’œ If you understand that and you can explain it calmly and sensitively and tolerantly to your partner and family using good communication skills, then you are more likely to be living harmoniously with them than if you can't.

The first thing you need to know in order to get the right amount of personal space is how much space you need.

πŸ€” Do you need to be physically on your own to get emotional alone space or is it enough to be in a room with other people but sitting reading a book, or with headphones on listening to some music?

πŸ’œ How does it work for you? (Let me know in the comments)

πŸ€” And how does that relate to what others need? Obviously if you're going to be living harmoniously with other humans it's not just about what you want, you've got to consider them as well.

Today I want to talk about personal space.

πŸ€” What do I mean by personal space? It's about having the right amount of space for yourself but also understanding what the needs of the people around you are.

πŸ’œ If you crave a lot of emotional space then you'll like being by yourself and if you're tired or not feeling well, you'll probably want to curl up with a blanket and a book, and maybe some chocolate, and be on your own.

πŸ’œ But there are people in the world who actually would much rather be in a big group.

✨ If you're sharing your living space with people who have the other preference to you, whether that's for a lot of space or very little, they're going to find it difficult to understand what your needs are - particularly if you don't tell them.

Come back tomorrow for more on personal space and how to get the right amount for you.

Presenting yourself with confidence - Tip 6.

✨ Listen to yourself ✨

πŸ₯³ Are you your top cheerleader or your severest critic? What are your inner voices saying? What would the most supportive, caring person say to you? Train yourself to
listen to your inner coach instead of your inner critic.

Tip 5 (of 6) on presenting yourself with confidence.

✨ Know your demons ✨

πŸ€” What exactly don't you like about speaking in public? If you don't know your demon you can't defeat it. Finish the sentence 'I don't feel confident because...'. Then ask yourself why that is. Keep going until you get a specific answer, then deal with that.
