As proceedings continue in the case involving Robert Bush of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, our thoughts remain firmly with the families who continue to relive their distress through victim impact statements this week. Their courage and determination throughout this long fight for justice have been extraordinary.
The vast majority of funeral directors are members of trade associations like the NAFD. They act with professionalism and care, but one failure for anyone in their hour of need is one too many.
There remains no statutory oversight of the funeral sector. This needs to change. Our position at the NAFD has always been clear - we want to see independent statutory regulation of all funeral directors.
We welcome confirmation from Emma Hardy MP that the Prime Minister has agreed to meet to discuss the need for reform. The NAFD stands ready to work constructively with Government to introduce independent statutory regulation that delivers consistent standards, strengthens public confidence and, above all, provides greater protection for bereaved families.
The dead cannot protect themselves. That responsibility falls to the rest of us – and it is one that can no longer be delayed.
