Officers were on patrol across the region once again this weekend as part Op Apex, the force’s campaign to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.

Unfortunately, several traffic offence reports were issued for offences including no MOT, using a mobile whilst driving, not wearing a seatbelt, failing to stop at a red traffic light and excessive speeding.

One motorcycle was recorded travelling at 127mph on the A494 in Mold.

A second motorcycle was then recorded travelling at 97mph on the same stretch of road with a pillion passenger.

Operation Apex will see officers continuing to patrol key routes throughout the summer, engaging with road users and acting where offences place lives at risk.

Yesterday afternoon, officers stopped a vehicle in St Asaph due to the manner of driving and the condition of the vehicle.

The driver provided a positive roadside drugs test for cannabis and was arrested on suspicion of drug driving. A traffic offence report was also issued for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Two of the offences addressed in one stop.

Worryingly, there were also children in the vehicle.

The 45-year-old man was later released under investigation whilst we await the result of further tests.

If you drive after taking drugs, expect to be stopped, tested and arrested.

Make the right choice every journey.

Pnawn ddoe fe stopiodd swyddogion gerbyd yn Llanelwy oherwydd y dull o yrru a chyflwr y cerbyd.

Darparodd y gyrrwr brawf positif am ganabisar ochr y ffordd, a chafodd ei arestio ar amheuaeth o yrru dan ddylanwad cyffuriau. Cafodd tocyn cosb ei roi hefyd gan nad oedd yn gwisgo gwregys diogelwch.

Dyma ddau o’r troseddau mewn un stop.

Yn anffodus, roedd plant yn y cerbyd hefyd.

Cafodd y dyn 45 oed ei ryddhau’n ddiweddarach dan ymchwiliad tra bod ni’n aros am ganlyniad profion pellach.

Os ydych chi’n gyrru ar ôl cymryd cyffuriau, disgwyliwch cael eich stopio, eich profi a’ch arestio.

Gwnewch y dewis cywir pob siwrne.

🚛 During speed enforcement activity on the A*5 at Broughton yesterday afternoon, one of the team members recorded a 44-tonne articulated HGV travelling at 85mph.

Further checks identified additional offences relating to the driver's tacograph and the absence of a valid Driver CPC qualification.

The driver has been reported for summons.

Excessive speed by any vehicle poses a significant risk to all road users, but especially when involving vehicles of this size and weight. Enforcement activity will continue across North Wales to improve road safety and reduce the risk of serious collisions.

There have been 13 fatalities on the roads of North Wales so far this year - seven of those being motorcyclists.

Whilst all remain under investigation, the devastating consequences serve as a stark reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

⬇️

🚨 We are urging all road users to take extra care this summer following a number of fatal road traffic collisions involving motorcycles across North Wales 🚨

As the summer holiday period gets underway and more people take to the roads, we are renewing our road safety message through Operation Apex, our ongoing road safety campaign.

Tragically, so far in 2026, there have been 13 fatal collisions, seven of those involving motorcycles, on the roads of North Wales.

Every one of these incidents remains under investigation by our Serious Collision Investigation Unit and Roads Crime Unit, and our thoughts are with the families, friends and communities affected by these devastating events. Due to the ongoing investigations, it would be inappropriate to comment on the individual circumstances; however, the devastating consequences serve as a stark reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

The increase in road users during the summer months, particularly motorcyclists enjoying the warmer weather, makes this a crucial time for everyone to take extra care.

As part of Operation Apex, officers from the Roads Crime Unit will continue to work proactively to improve road safety through education, engagement and enforcement.

A man has sadly died following a collision on the A548 in Bagillt yesterday, 21 July.

Emergency services attended the westbound side of the carriageway at around 4.40pm following reports of a collision involving a motorbike.

Despite their best efforts, a 56-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations into the collision are ongoing and the coroner has been informed.

“I would urge anybody who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant dash-cam footage prior to the collision, to come forward as soon as possible.”

Yesterday one of the team stopped a motorcyclist travelling at 56mph in a 30mph zone in Llandudno.

This wasn’t the first encounter with the rider. The same officer had previously stopped them for their manner of riding and the rider had also previously been issued with a Section 59 notice by one of our HGC Adran Cŵn / North Wales Police Dogs colleagues.

Due to the repeated anti-social use of the motorcycle, it was seized under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act.

The rider’s father later attended the scene and thanked the officer for taking action, explaining that he had been concerned about his son’s riding and was relieved the motorcycle had been seized.

With the school summer holidays now underway, our roads are busier with families, children, pedestrians, cyclists and visitors enjoying everything North Wales has to offer. Driving or riding at these speeds through a 30mph area puts lives at unnecessary risk.

Enforcement isn’t about catching people out – it’s about preventing serious collisions and protecting our communities. Please slow down, ride responsibly and think about the consequences before opening the throttle.

On Tuesday, officers from the Roads Crime Unit undertook a joint operation with colleagues from the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, aimed at checking the roadworthiness of vans and HGVs in the Ewloe area.

In total, approximately 40 commercial vehicles were given thorough checks, and several concerning faults were found, including:

❌ Driving with no insurance - vehicle seized
❌ Vehicles with no valid MOT
⚖️ 6 vehicles were overladen
⚠️ 1 vehicle assessed as being in a dangerous condition
🪪 1 driver found to be driving without a valid digital tachograph card
🛌🏻 One driver found to be driving with insufficient weekly rest
💰 One vehicle cabled due to faults totalling £3000 in fines
⛔ HGV parked up and cabled for 45 hours due to various offences
👮🏻‍♀️ One male arrested as wanted on an Extradition Warrant.

Sgt Emma Birrell from the Roads Crime Unit said: “We regularly undertake operations like this to increase road safety, identifying vehicles that fail to meet basic road safety standards.

“Commercial vehicles typically do a lot of miles, and therefore regular maintenance is vital. Some of the vehicles assessed were of such a poor standard, they were immediately taken off the road to prevent a potential collision or injury to the driver and other motorists.

“We will continue to undertake enforcement action to ensure that everyone using our road network does so safely and legally.”
