Here’s a simple diagram I use with clients to explain why calf and ankle capacity is so important.

The numbers aren’t exact, but the principle absolutely is.

Every time your foot strikes the ground, the ground pushes back with an equal and opposite force - Newton’s Third Law. This is known as Ground Reaction Force (GRF).

Your body doesn’t simply absorb this force, your muscles and tendons actively manage it.

During running, the gastrocnemius, soleus and Achilles tendon are responsible for producing and transferring a significant proportion of this force, acting like a spring to store and release energy with every stride.

But what happens if they can’t cope?

The load doesn’t disappear; it gets redistributed. The knee, hamstrings / quads, lower back or even another muscle group is forced to compensate, often increasing the risk of pain or injury elsewhere.

That knee pain that seemed to come “out of nowhere” might not actually be a knee problem. It could be a calf complex that lacks the strength, endurance or capacity to meet the demands placed upon it.

That’s why building calf capacity isn’t just about stronger calves; it’s about creating a more resilient lower limb and improving the way your body handles load.

Sometimes the site of your pain isn’t the source of your problem.

Train the tissues that manage force and everything upstream benefits.

🧊 Ice or 🔥 Heat?

One of the most common questions I get in clinic…

“Should I ice it, or should I use heat?”

The answer? It depends on what your tissues are actually doing, not just where it hurts.

🧊 Use ICE for pain relief & swelling.
If you’ve had a recent injury with inflammation, bruising or swelling, ice can temporarily reduce nerve conduction velocity, providing an analgesic (pain-relieving) effect. It may also help limit excessive swelling in the very early stages following acute trauma.

Think:
✔️ Acute ankle sprains
✔️ Fresh muscle strains
✔️ Impact injuries
✔️ Post-exercise flare-ups with swelling

🔥 Use HEAT for stiffness.
Heat increases local blood flow, improves tissue extensibility and reduces muscle spindle activity, helping muscles relax while improving joint mobility. If you wake up feeling like the Tin Man, heat is usually your friend.

Think:
✔️ Tight necks
✔️ Stiff lower backs
✔️ Restricted shoulders
✔️ Morning joint stiffness

⚖️ Chronic pain? Use both.
Long-term pain is rarely just about damaged tissue. The nervous system often becomes more sensitive over time.

Alternating heat and ice, or simply using whichever provides the greatest symptom relief, can be effective. Heat can reduce muscle guarding and improve movement, while ice may help calm painful flare-ups. The most important thing? Keep moving. Movement remains one of the strongest evidence-based interventions for persistent musculoskeletal pain.

Remember… neither ice nor heat actually “heals” an injury. They’re tools to help manage symptoms so you can continue moving and progressively loading the tissues appropriately.

Only thing I can hear post Football World Cup🎶🇳🇴

As a sports massage therapist, I often see athletes and active individuals with restricted thoracic mobility, overactive hip flexors or poor scapular mechanics.

Rowing can be an excellent adjunct to manual therapy and corrective exercise; but only when movement quality comes before intensity.

Remember:
Power comes from the legs, stability from the trunk and efficiency from the timing of the entire kinetic chain.

The Concept2 RowErg isn’t just a cardio machine; it’s a full-body movement pattern that challenges strength, endurance, mobility and coordination simultaneously. This is why I personally think that the RowErg is one of the best tools for musculoskeletal health.

The teal lines flowing through this animation are more than just movement.

They represent Salt + Stone.

They begin within the fibres where tension, restriction and fatigue can build through training, work and everyday life. As they move through the body, they symbolise the precision, care and expertise behind every treatment we provide.

Gradually, those lines become fluid.

They flow.

They adapt.

They connect.

Just as every treatment is designed to help restore movement, improve recovery and support performance.

The flowing lines evolve into something greater… The Salt + Stone wave.

A reflection of who we are.

Inspired by Cornwall’s coastline, shaped by the power of the sea and driven by a belief that the body performs best when it can move freely.

From muscle fibre to ocean flow.
From tension to movement.
From recovery to performance.

This is Salt + Stone.

Southwest Regionals – Individual Qualifier 2 ✔️

This one means more than just a competition.

After a serious illness and a bout of cellulitis in my left arm right through the elbow joint; I was forced to step away from training completely. Simple movement became difficult and the impact of strong medication and antibiotics left my body feeling shut down. I was advised to expect 2–3 months of recovery.

Three weeks later, I was back.

Not at full capacity, but back. Listening, adapting, rebuilding.

This qualifier isn’t about performance alone. It’s a check-in. A way to understand where my body is at right now. Under load, under pressure and in motion again.

I’ve leaned heavily on the fundamentals:
• Maintaining general health
• Rebuilding strength and conditioning
• Prioritising recovery
• Staying consistent with my own soft tissue care

There were moments I genuinely didn’t know the way forward. How to train, how to recover or if a full return was even realistic after a bacterial joint infection.

So I did what I encourage others to do. I asked for help. I researched, I listened and I worked alongside experienced practitioners to map a safe and effective return with the chiropractors at

That’s something I want to emphasise 👇

You don’t have to navigate injury or illness alone.

Even as practitioners, we need guidance too.

If you’re unsure, reach out. There are people who can support you, help you understand your body and guide you back stronger.

This is mine. What’s your next step?
