Sneaky little family trip "up north" for a few days enjoying some family time before leaving for the World Equestrian Games next Saturday!

And no... before you ask I did not go for a swim. I did manage a paddle but left the full dunking to the husband and kids (crazy lot! 🤣)

Its definitely important to make time in the hectic schedule for these little trips away

We were thrilled that our past president Jo Paul was able to highlight the importance of understanding what really matters when it comes to choosing a musculoskeletal practitioner.

Not only is it important for us to ensure our registrants practice to our gold standard guidelines, it’s incredibly important for us to raise awareness of where owners can find practitioners who are qualified, insured and committed to their education.

BRITISH EVENTING STATEMENT

It is with immense sadness that British Eventing confirms the tragic loss of Sophie Fouracre and Kerry Donoghue following separate incidents on Saturday 18th July 2026.

Sophie Fouracre, aged 34, was fatally injured in a cross-country accident riding Rhubarbsfox Brittania, at Swalcliffe Park, Oxfordshire, England.

Hours later at Penrith in Cumbria, Kerry Donoghue, aged 42, died following a cross-country accident riding Carneyhaugh Rua.

At both venues, the event medical teams responded immediately and provided emergency treatment. Despite their best efforts sadly neither rider could be saved.

Both horses were examined by the attending veterinary team and were found to be uninjured.

Rosie Williams, Chief Executive of British Eventing, said: “The British Eventing community is heartbroken. On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Kerry and Sophie's families, friends and loved ones at this devastating time. Our thoughts are also with their fellow competitors, organisers, officials, volunteers and everyone who has been affected by these tragic events.

“We are immensely grateful to the organisers, doctors, paramedics, veterinary teams, officials and emergency services at both events for the professionalism, compassion and care they showed in the most difficult of circumstances.

“The loss of two members of our eventing family on the same day is almost beyond words, and we know the sadness of these events will be felt profoundly across the sport for some time to come.”

In accordance with British Eventing's safety and incident review procedures, comprehensive reviews of both accidents will now be undertaken.

We recognise the impact these tragic events will have across the eventing community. Anyone affected is encouraged to seek support through the British Eventing Support Trust Helpline, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 07780 008877.

We respectfully ask that the privacy of both families is respected during this incredibly difficult time.

Tapering Workload... The New Holiday for Horses? 🐴 🍹

It’s becoming less common for horses to have long, complete "holidays" from work. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

In my opinion, it depends on the individual horse, their workload, competition schedule, and even their rider. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

For many horses, it can be more beneficial to think in terms of tapering workload rather than repeatedly stopping and restarting work altogether. By carefully adjusting training intensity throughout the year, we can help horses perform at their best when it matters most, while still allowing them periods of physical and mental recovery.

We know that sudden increases in workload can significantly increase the risk of injury (don’t forget the 10% rule!). Instead of long periods of inactivity followed by rapid fitness gains, consider planning lighter weeks or months alongside periods of more intensive training. This approach helps maintain conditioning while giving the body time to recover and adapt. It also helps to ensure that your horse peaks just for the right moment (hello WEG?!) and helps to prevent injury both short term AND long term

Every horse is different, and finding the right balance can be challenging. One thing is for certain, you can't keep horses in full high intensity work all the time. It just isn't fair on them, physically or mentally.

Not sure where to start? Why not speak to your local friendly physiotherapist? They can help you create a training plan that supports both performance and long-term soundness.

A different kind of visit to Badminton today with a trip to Badminton Flower Show

Felt a bit strange to be there in a dress rather than covered in horse hair, but still a great visit! Only came home with a few plants, now to find a gap in the garden to plant them 🤭
