A colleague of mine shared this photo a couple of months ago as a gentle reminder that we are all in survival mode and as such we need to be kinder to ourselves. With these new restrictions coming into place and with a difficult few months ahead this seems fitting again. Look after yourself people, do things that make you feel good and be kind to each other ❤️

Hints and tips: Separation anxiety in children

With most children having gone back to school last week or going back this week, and with the current level of sociatal anxiety about COVID I thought I'd share something that has really helped our family with separation anxiety. About a year ago one of our 4 kids was really struggling with anxiety whilst at school and just did not want to be away from us. Whilst dealing with the underlying causes to this I used a technique to help him whilst he was away from me. I can't take credit for it though as I saw it on another social media site at the time. Every morning I would draw a little star on both of our wrists and at different points during the day we would press this star and imagine being hugged by the other 🥰 this allowed my son to feel that connection to me whenever he needed it. At the end of each day we would talk about all the times we'd pressed our respective stars and how it had helped. This eventually spread to the other 3 kids and I ended up going to work with an arm full of doodles everyday 😂 the conversations we'd have at the end of the school day were lovely as a result and really helped with the separation anxiety.

If anyone would like to do a bit more research, the underlying theory to this is based in the psychodynamic discipline where transitional objects are often used between a client and therapist. The thought behind it being that we all need to feel connected to others and that importance can be placed in everyday items to achieve this.
