Practising Tai Chi Slowly
I borrow a moment from the hurried years,
and pay it back through breath, not tears.
The world rushes on, impatient and fast,
but I choose to flow like water, slow and vast—
never still,
never rushed.
Within this slowness,
body and time and space are fused:
the head lifts toward the sky,
held by a golden thread on high;
the feet seek out the earth below,
and the quiet ground replies, soft and slow.
The hips command the sink and rise;
the waist turns left, the waist turns right;
the hands just flow with what's within—
no forcing out, no holding in.
Forward it surges, then falls behind;
behind it surges, then falls in kind;
the edges surge, then fade to the core;
the core swells out, then seeks the shore—
one wave, and then one wave more.
Water holds no fixed form of its own,
yet the force beneath is rooted, grown;
the body turns as the moment leads,
energy and intent, two become one.
Speed conceals so much from sight;
slowness reveals it all to light—
a trace of tension held in the shoulder,
a ripple of restlessness, growing older,
and then, at last,
a balance returning, settling fast.
Each movement
is not delayed on purpose or plan,
but simply unfolds as naturally as it can;
each pause between,
half-hidden, half-seen,
is where motion and stillness lean.
Like a tree,
its rings grown wide, one year to the next;
like flowing water, rushing free,
that wears the mountain stone, perplexed.
Small changes,
gathered fold on fold,
in time become
a strength unspoken, quiet, bold.
Not until the closing of the form
do I understand, at last, what's true—
what I have practised
was never merely slowness alone;
it is, through every rise and fall,
letting body and mind,
together with Heaven and Earth, recall,
and slowly flow as one,
into a single rhythm's call.
一線相牽;
胯,隨沉隨浮;
腰,徐徐而轉;
手,只是順勢而流;
後湧前沒;
勁有來處;
快,掩蓋了許多;
而是自然流現;
年輪一圈圈生長;
從來不只是慢;
