📅 Today is National PTSD Awareness Day (27th June)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event, not just military veterans. In fact, an estimated 1 in 10 people in the UK will experience PTSD in their lifetime.

Living with trauma can feel deeply isolating, but recovery is possible, and you do not have to carry this alone.

🔍 Look out for these common signs:

Flashbacks or nightmares about the event.
Feeling constantly 'on edge', irritable, or struggling to sleep.
Avoiding places, people, or thoughts that trigger memories.
Feeling emotionally numb or detached from loved ones.

👉 Where to find support in the UK:

Contact our surgery: Speak to a GP for a confidential chat and to access specialist NHS treatments like EMDR or Trauma-Focused CBT.

NHS Talking Therapies: Residents in England can self-refer directly online via the NHS website.

Charity Support: Visit PTSD UK for excellent resources and guidance.

If you need urgent mental health help, call 111 or contact the Samaritans on 116 123.

The Met Office and UK Health Security Agency have issued a rare Red Warning for extreme heat across the Midlands, including Coventry.
Temperatures could soar to between 38°C and 40°C with high humidity. This alert remains in effect from 09:00 BST on Wednesday until 21:00 BST on Thursday, presenting a significant risk to life.

A Red alert is the most severe warning available, indicating that widespread impacts on daily life, infrastructure, and health services are highly likely.

Key Details & Risks:
- Extreme Temperatures: Daytime highs will exceed 30°C widely, with local peaks approaching 40°C.
- Tropical Nights: Overnight temperatures are not expected to drop below 20°C to 22°C, providing your body with little relief to recover from the daytime heat.
- Health Impacts: Severe impacts are anticipated across health and social care services. There is an increased risk to life across the entire population, not just the vulnerable.
- Infrastructure: Potential disruptions to travel, power grids, and water supplies are likely.

Men’s Health Week 2026: One Step at a Time

From 15th to 21st June, we are supporting Men’s Health Week across the UK. This year’s theme is all about making progress, not perfection—taking small, manageable steps to protect your physical and mental health.

Statistics show that men are significantly less likely to visit their GP surgery than women, often waiting until a minor issue becomes a major problem. We want to change that. Our surgery is a safe, confidential, and judgment-free space for everyone.

This week, we are asking the men in our community to take just one of these vital steps:

🩺 1. Book that overdue appointment: If you have been ignoring a new lump, an unusual ache, a persistent cough, or changes to your bathroom habits, please contact us. Finding health issues early makes them much easier to treat.

💙 2. Talk about your mental health: Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or consistently low is not something you have to deal with alone. Mental health is health. Our team is here to listen and connect you with the right support.

📊 3. Know your numbers: If you are aged 40 to 74, you are eligible for a free NHS Health Check. It takes just a few minutes to check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI, giving you a clear picture of your heart health.

You don't need to wait for a crisis to speak to a doctor or nurse. You can request an appointment by using our new Rapid Health booking request system which can be accessed through our website https://henleygreenmc.nhs.uk/

Let’s take that first step together. Your health matters.

Why have we introduced Rapid Health?

We listened to patient feedback and recognise that access to appointments including online booking is important to you. Therefore we opted to use the Rapid Health triage tool because we believe it will result in a more efficient service for our patients, ensuring you receive the correct care, at the right time with the most appropriate clinician.

New Appointment booking system (Rapid Health)

A positive change is coming to our practice. We are launching Smart Triage – a new and quicker way to book appointments and send requests to the practice. We plan to start using it from 19/05/2026. For most people, it will be the fastest way to get an appointment.

Smart Triage will help us respond faster, make sure we see people with the greatest need first, and free up our GPs to spend more time caring for patients and less on admin. It’s designed mainly for new health problems, though you can also use it for simple admin requests like a sick/fit note.

Using it is simple. You’ll fill in an online form, that takes about three and a half minutes to complete. (For those without online access, our phone lines will be available as normal.) Based on your answers, Smart Triage will guide you to the right appointment.

Note that Smart Triage is a proven, NHS-assured system that keeps your information secure.

What do I need to do now? Please check that we have the right email address on your medical record. You’ll need this to use the system. If you have recently given the practice your updated email address this will of been updated. If you’re not sure, you can update your details via the NHS app, or click the banner below

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! ☀️🧴

With the sun finally making an appearance, it’s the perfect time to get "Sun Smart." Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but the good news is that most cases are preventable and highly treatable if caught early.
Protect your skin this month (and every month):

✅ Check your skin: Use the ABCDE method to spot changing moles.
✅ Slip, Slop, Slap: Slip on a shirt, slop on SPF 30+ (with 4 or 5 UVA stars!), and slap on a hat.
✅ Avoid sunbeds: There’s no such thing as a safe tan from a UV bed.

If you notice anything new, changing, or unusual, don't wait—book an appointment with your GP. Early detection saves lives! 🧡
