Rumble, rumble, dinosaur! Wake up dinos, time to roar!

This month's story is a fun-filled dinosaur adventure that takes little readers on an exciting journey from morning to bedtime. With catchy rhymes, colourful illustrations, and plenty of prehistoric friends, Rumble, Rumble, Dinosaur encourages a love of language, rhythm, and imaginative play.

๐Ÿ’š Sing the story together and join in with the repeated refrains.

๐Ÿ’š Encourage your child to make up their own dinosaur sounds and movements.

Reading stories with rhyme and repetition helps build confidence, communication skills, and a lifelong love of books.

A new school year can bring a mix of emotions for both children and parents. Excitement, uncertainty, anxiety, anticipation... sometimes all at once!

Whether your child is starting a new class, moving school, meeting a new teacher or returning to a familiar environment, transitions can feel challenging.

Here are a few simple ways to help make the move back to school a little smoother:
โœ… Start routines early
โœ… Use visual supports
โœ… Keep communication open with school
โœ… Celebrate small wins

Remember, every child adjusts at their own pace. Some children settle quickly, while others need a little more time and support, and that's okay.

If you're concerned about your child's communication, speech, language, stammering, sensory processing or regulation as they return to school, we're here to help. We currently have a small number of appointments available next week with our Speech and Language Therapists.

Understanding language is about more than hearing words.

When we think about communication, we often focus on what a child says and how they talk. But before children can use language, they first need to understand it.

Some children work incredibly hard to make sense of the language they hear every day. They may watch others, follow familiar routines, or use context clues to work things out, which can make difficulties with understanding less obvious. They may need extra time to process information, simplified language or additional visual supports.

Because receptive language difficulties are often less obvious than speech difficulties, they can sometimes go unnoticed. Trust your instincts if you feel your child is struggling to understand what is being said.

With the right support, children can develop stronger understanding skills and greater confidence in communicating with the world around them. When we adapt how we communicate, we help children understand and participate.

Today we would like to re-introduce our friendly therapy space (The Hive), on our anniversary of moving in. ๐Ÿ It has been such an exciting and fulfilling 4 years!

When you arrive at The Hive our reception staff will welcome you in through the door and let the therapy team know that you are here. ๐Ÿ‘‹ Our friendly reception area is filled with comfy seats, fun toys and books to keep you and your child entertained when you arrive. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿงธ

The therapy spaces are child friendly (no desks!) and are prepared with games and toys related to your childโ€™s interests. Whether youโ€™re accessing our speech and language therapy, autism or occupational therapy service our team will explore activities at your child's own pace, following their lead to ensure they feel safe and support their development in a fun way. ๐Ÿ

Each child is unique, and every session reflects that.

When people hear "speech and language therapy", they often think of speech sounds and pronunciation.

But language is about much more than saying words clearly.

Language includes understanding what others say, learning new vocabulary, putting words together, sharing ideas, asking questions and joining conversations.

Some children find understanding language difficult. Others understand lots but struggle to express themselves. Every child has a unique communication profile.

If you're worried about your child's language development, trust your instincts. Support isn't just about talking, it's about helping children communicate, understand and connect with the people around them.

A little trip down memory lane as we say goodbye to Toni. ๐Ÿ’œ
From the early days of Speech Stuff to where we are now, Toni has been there through so many important moments, always ready to help and always caring about the families we support.
Weโ€™re so grateful for everything sheโ€™s done and so proud of all she has achieved.
Thank you, Toni. Youโ€™ll always be part of the Speech Stuff story. โœจ๐Ÿ’œ

Ok, so the resources cupboard is fully stocked (read: bursting at the seams), but we never run out of fun toys and equipment to use in our sessions. Thank you Julie!

"But they're not talking yet..."
One of the most common things we hear from parents is concern about first words.
Words are important, but communication starts much earlier.

Looking, smiling, pointing, showing, leading you to something, making sounds, sharing enjoyment and taking turns are all important communication skills that develop before spoken language.

By noticing and responding to these early communication attempts, you're already helping your child's communication grow. ๐Ÿ’œ
Many parents wonder whether it's too early to seek support if their child isn't talking yet. Speech and language therapy isn't just about words. We can support the development of early communication skills such as interaction, understanding, play, gestures and shared attention long before spoken language emerges.
