THE WORLD CUP DILEMMA...
Late-night kick-offs.
A few beers.
Crisps, pizza, and "I'll start again tomorrow..."
Sound familiar?
I'm not saying you can't enjoy the World Cup. You absolutely should.
But if you're frustrated that the scales aren't moving, your energy is low, and your workouts feel harder...this might be why:
β Alcohol reduces sleep quality, even if it helps you fall asleep.
β Poor sleep affects recovery, hunger hormones, and decision-making the next day.
β Those "match snacks" can easily add an extra 500β1,500 calories without you realising.
β Alcohol can temporarily reduce muscle protein synthesis, meaning your body isn't recovering as efficiently from training.
β The combination of late nights, dehydration, and high-calorie foods often leads to less movement and poorer food choices the following day.
Does that mean you can't enjoy the football?
Absolutely not.
β
Alternate alcoholic drinks with water.
β
Be mindful of portion sizes.
β
Choose high-protein snacks where possible.
β
Plan your calories across the day.
β
Prioritise sleep whenever you can.
β
Remember: one match won't ruin your progress...but turning every game into an excuse for a "write-off week" might.
You don't have to choose between enjoying the World Cup and getting results.
The people who succeed don't aim for perfection.
They learn how to balance real life with healthy habits.
