Leighton Hospital Maternity Unit

Leighton Hospital Maternity Unit We aim to provide up to date, evidence based information to pregnant people and their families.

At Leighton Hospital we provide the highest standard of care to mothers, babies and their families. We strive to achieve excellence in our care by working in partnership with others in the multi professional team. We have a dedicated team of Midwives, Obstetricians, Maternity Support Workers, and other Health Care Professionals to support women in their pregnancy journey. We endeavour to create an

atmosphere where there is mutual respect, effective communication, sharing of information, and an agreed, individualised, plan of care for mothers and babies. We maintain high standards by the application of policies which support evidence based practice. Reflection on practice, audits and risk reporting are tools we use to monitor this. We aim to create an inter-professional learning environment, enabling staff and students to develop their full potential, by achievement of their own developmental needs.

May birth statistics are now available.
These infographics have been developed in partnership and were shaped over many months through conversations with staff, the MNVP and local families.
A lot of work has gone into checking the numbers and thinking carefully about what information families told us they would find most helpful. Our aim is to share something that feels clear, balanced and transparent, while also being supportive for families.
We hope these infographics can be:
• a keepsake for families
• a transparent snapshot of local outcomes
• a helpful tool to support antenatal decision-making
These are still relatively new, so we would really value your feedback. If there’s something you like, something you’d change, or something that doesn’t feel quite right, please let us know.
You can share feedback here:

Congratulations to all of our May families 💜

Everyone is finding the heat this week difficult but being pregnant makes it even harder. Here are some tips for keeping cool in the hot weather.

Hot weather can be extra challenging when you’re pregnant. Tommy’s midwife Amina has some tips for staying safe and well in hot weather, at home and abroad.

With another hot week forecast remember to keep your baby out of the sun. Don’t cover prams, buggies and travel systems with blankets, cloths or any cover that stops the air flowing. They risk the baby getting too hot, and mean you can’t see if they’re having difficulties or monitor their temperature as easily.

Just a gentle reminder as the sunnier days approach—please be mindful of little ones in the sun ☀️ Babies are especially sensitive to heat and sunlight. While suncream can help, it shouldn’t be the primary form of protection. Whenever possible, prioritise shade and dress them in lightweight, breathable clothing to keep them safe and comfortable☀️🌡️
