I love what I do and how I help others feel better but….
As a therapist your body is part of your toolkit 💚
When we’re concentrating on giving our client the best possible treatment, it’s surprisingly easy to forget about the person actually giving it… us!
I certainly didn’t think enough about this when I first started.
Over time I’ve learnt to move around the couch rather than overstretch, use my body weight instead of relying on the strength in my hands and thumbs, and adjust my couch height depending on the treatment I’m giving.
And if something feels uncomfortable, I change my position. You don’t get extra points for making life difficult for yourself! 😂
As therapists, our bodies are one of the most important tools we have. If we want to enjoy a long career doing what we love, we need to look after them too.
So next time you’re treating, check in with yourself:
Are your shoulders relaxed?
Are you reaching when you could move?
Are you using your whole body, or asking your hands to do all the work?
Small changes can make a huge difference over a day of treatments.
Your treatment shouldn’t come at the expense of your own body.
