You get up in the morning, pour a cup of coffee, and suddenly—a sharp pain on the side of your elbow just as you grip the cup. Or you're working at the computer, twirling the mouse around, and you feel an unpleasant tugging and burning sensation on the outside of your elbow. Sound familiar?
It's one of the most common overuse pains in active adults—and you don't have to play tennis to experience it!

✅What is tennis elbow and where exactly does it hurt?

Tennis elbow, or inflammation of the lateral epicondyle of the humerus, is a condition caused by overuse of the tendons of the wrist extensor muscles at their attachment to the elbow. Simply put, the muscles responsible for lifting the wrist and extending the fingers are attached to a small bump on the outside of the elbow, and this is where micro-injuries and inflammation occur.

The pain appears on the side of the elbow—not from the inside ,but from the outside. It often radiates down the forearm.

It worsens with:

✔️squeezing with your hand (jar, cup, tool),
✔️twisting the wrist (unscrewing a nut, drilling, stirring),
✔️lifting even light objects with an outstretched hand,
✔️long work at the keyboard or mouse,
✔️activities requiring finger precision .

✅What to avoid during treatment:

✔️Resting for tennis elbow does not mean immobilization - but certain activities should be limited or modified until symptoms subside.

✔️Strong gripping and squeezing.
✔️Repetitive wrist twists .
✔️Working with a straight elbow under load.
✔️Unergonomic position at the desk.
✔️Sports that require wrist work.

✅Rehabilitation exercises for tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow rehabilitation is based on gradually restoring flexibility and strength to the tendons and extensor muscles. Regular exercise is crucial – results don't appear after a single session, but after several weeks of systematic work. Below are five exercises that form the basis of home rehabilitation.

✔️Stretching the wrist extensors.

✔️Eccentric exercises with a dumbbell or band.

✔️Squeezing a rehabilitation ball.

✔️Wrist rotations.

✔️Stretching the supinators and pronators.

✅When is it worth seeing a physiotherapist?

Home exercises are sufficient for many cases of tennis elbow, especially when the symptoms are moderate and last less than a few weeks. However, there are situations where seeing a specialist is not an option, but a necessity.

✅It is worth making an appointment with a physiotherapist if:

✔️pain lasts longer than 6-8 weeks despite exercise and activity restriction,
✔️the symptoms get worse instead of subsiding
✔️the pain is very severe and occurs even at rest or at night
✔️you have difficulty performing basic daily activities.

✅Stress doesn't exist only in our heads!

The body reacts to it physically, too—including through changes in muscle tension.

One area particularly sensitive to stress is the neck and shoulder region, especially the upper part of the trapezius muscle!

Interestingly, its activity can increase due to mental tension, even when we are sitting still and not engaging in any physical exertion.

✅Why does this happen?

When we are under pressure, rushing, or stressed for an extended period, the body ramps up its readiness for action!

Our breathing changes, muscle tension rises, and our shoulders may unconsciously lift slightly.
Brief tension isn't necessarily a problem.
Muscles naturally tense and relax throughout the day.

The issue arises when stress is prolonged or frequent. The neck and shoulder muscles can remain active for hours, with fewer and fewer opportunities to fully relax.

✅Over time, we may begin to experience:

✔️neck stiffness,
✔️tension and heaviness in the shoulders,
✔️restricted range of motion,
✔️a sensation of muscle fatigue.

A similar mechanism occurs in the muscles used for chewing. That is why, during periods of high stress, many people unconsciously clench their jaws.

This brings me to something I frequently observe during massages and therapy sessions with my patients.

✅My patients often say that…:

"I didn't realize my body was so tense."

Sometimes, it is only when we begin to release tension in the neck and shoulders that a person notices just how much tension they had been holding onto all day.

Breathing changes. Shoulders naturally drop.
The face relaxes. And that is precisely why massage and therapy holds another important value for me!
It helps us notice tension we have grown accustomed to in our daily lives.

✅Sometimes, the body holds tension for far longer than we realize.

Therefore, body awareness and self-care are essential for maintaining good mental and physical well-being ❤️.
