📜 If your Scottish ancestors lived after the year 1855, you are in luck. Because Scotland kept some of the richest records of ordinary lives to be found anywhere in the world.

In 1855, Scotland introduced what is called statutory registration, the official recording by the state of every birth, marriage and death in the country. England had begun something similar a little earlier, but the Scots, in their very first year, decided to record far more detail than almost anyone else. And for the family historian, that detail is pure gold.

A Scottish death record, for example, will often name not just the person who died, but both of their parents, including the mother's maiden name. In a single document, you can leap back an entire generation. A marriage record may give the names and occupations of the fathers of both the bride and the groom. A birth record can tell you exactly where and even at what time a child came into the world.

The authorities found that first year of 1855 so demanding that they actually reduced the amount of information collected in the years that followed, which makes an 1855 record an extraordinary treasure if you are fortunate enough to have an ancestor recorded then.

All of these records are held today by the National Records of Scotland and can be searched through the official ScotlandsPeople service. For a small fee you can call up the actual handwritten page, and see your great great grandparents recorded in the careful hand of a Victorian registrar.

Behind every entry is a real person. A baby born in a but and ben cottage. A couple married after the harvest. A life that ended, and was written down, so that you could one day find it again.

Your ancestors left you a message in those ledgers. All you have to do is go and read it. 💙
