Families deserve clear information when making funeral choices.

Here at Tester & Jones Funeral Services, we understand that direct cremations are right for some families. However, since the growth of companies such as 'Pure Cremation', who are able to portray themselves through national media campaigns, it may be easy to forget that your local independent funeral director can offer the same option.

Choosing Tester & Jones - your local independent funeral director - means familiar faces are with you every step of the way. Your loved one will be with us from the moment we bring them into our care, until the day of the cremation and beyond.

Always be assured that, even though you may want to choose the simplest of options, there will always be opportunity to tailor your needs and to speak to us in person for clear information and guidance.

Do call us on: 01892 611811 or drop into our building in London Road.

We feel very privileged to support so many local families at such a difficult time and are very proud of the thank you letters and notes we receive afterwards, such as this one:

Lovely to see our team in the June 2026 edition of Crowborough News. Glenys was invited to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Rotherfield WI (Evening Group), as we donated the inscribed plaque for the celebratory bench on Rotherfield Millennium Green. Then, our colleague Mike Scarlett took part in the annual Crowborough Boundary Walk, based on the ancient custom of 'beating the bounds'.

"For We're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the Sea.
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men are we;
And when you go to Sussex, whoever you may be,
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea!"

Last Friday, Glenys Jones and Jo Walsh made the trip to Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire to spend a day at the National Funeral Exhibition - the UK's largest funeral trade show.

Organised by the National Association of Funeral Directors, it was an opportunity to meet up with suppliers and other funeral directors, while discovering some of the latest innovations in the funeral industry.

Here at Tester & Jones, the support we provide our families doesn't end when the funeral has taken place. Not long after we were established, we launched our own dedicated Bereavement Group (the BGs) and it has provided support and friendship ever since.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, we are resharing a note Glenys received from a member recently:

“For the first time since they died, I felt hope and a feeling of belonging to life again, being among real people, all of whom had experienced the trauma of a loved one dying. I felt so welcomed and it was very healing. I now have hope, so a big hug and a big THANK YOU.”

While we might find ourselves facing up to the challenge of speaking at a wedding or in a work situation, at some point we could be offered an opportunity to deliver a eulogy. While this can seem like a huge responsibility, in many ways it is also an honour.

The word eulogy comes from two Classical Greek words: eu, meaning ‘well’ or ‘true’ and logia, ‘words’ or ‘text’. According to Andrew Motion, former poet laureate, who wrote a eulogy for The Queen Mother, a eulogy ‘might move us to tears, but it will start to heal us too’.

While many of our funerals at Tester & Jones are led by a minister or celebrant, over the years we have seen more family members taking part in a service by reading a poem or delivering a eulogy. Even if somebody is usually not used to public speaking, they often feel that it’s something they should do. Somebody we spoke to recently wrote and read the eulogy at their brother’s funeral and said it was their last chance to do ‘something for him’.
