As we get older, the number on the bathroom scale doesn’t tell the whole story. Maintaining muscle can be far more important for staying strong, mobile, balanced, and independent. Muscle helps us climb stairs, get out of a chair, carry groceries, protect our joints, and handle everyday activities. Losing weight without preserving muscle can sometimes leave us weaker rather than healthier. That’s why, after 50, the goal shouldn’t simply be “weigh less”—it should be “stay strong.” Regular strength exercises, enough protein, and staying active can all help protect the muscle you need to keep doing the things you love.
