Learning Bulletin | Deprivation of Liberty, Mental Capacity & Valid Consent

Understanding a person's rights, wishes, feelings, and individual circumstances is at the heart of person-centred care.

This recent Supreme Court ruling highlights the importance of moving beyond a rigid "one-size-fits-all" approach and focusing on practical, compassionate assessments that respect dignity, liberty, and human rights.

Key reminders for professionals, carers, and families:

Listen to what matters to the person
Promote choice and meaningful involvement
Consider the least restrictive options
Never assume consent where there is genuine doubt
Focus on the individual's lived experience

At Support Point Healthcare Services, we are committed to promoting awareness, best practice, and person-centred care that supports dignity, independence, and wellbeing.

This started with a simple question…

During my placements in secondary care, I saw just how intensive care needs can be and how incredibly hard healthcare teams work every single day.

But one question stayed with me:

What more can we do to support older adults in their recovery?

Not just clinically… but emotionally.

Because recovery is not only about treatment especially for older adults.

From both experience and research, we know that meaningful engagement and cognitive stimulation can have a positive impact on wellbeing and recovery particularly in acute elderly settings.

That’s why I created Support Point Healthcare Services 💚

A service designed to work alongside existing care by supporting:
Emotional wellbeing
Cognitive engagement
Meaningful activity and interaction
A smoother transition back into the community

What does this mean in practice?

• A more positive patient experience
• Increased confidence and engagement
• Better support throughout recovery
• Helping loved ones feel less isolated

This is not about replacing care
it’s about enhancing it in a meaningful, human way.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Supporting a loved one?

A quick question for those working in healthcare or supporting elderly patients…

In your experience, what makes the biggest difference to recovery for older adults in hospital?

Is it:
Clinical treatment
Emotional support
Engagement and activity
Social connection

From my experience, recovery is not just physical — especially in acute elderly wards.

Small things like:
meaningful conversation
keeping patients active
supporting cognition and confidence

can have a real impact on both wellbeing and recovery outcomes.

At Support Point Healthcare Services, we focus on supporting older adults through structured activities that:
✔ Keep them engaged and active
✔ Support cognitive wellbeing
✔ Enhance recovery experience
✔ Support smoother transition back into the community

This is about working alongside healthcare teams to enhance patient experience in a practical, person-centred way.

💬 What’s your experience? I’d really value your thoughts.

The importance of recovery activities in acute elderly wards

When we think about recovery in hospital, we often focus on clinical treatment — which is, of course, essential.

However, for many older adults in acute settings, recovery is also influenced by something equally important:

👉 Emotional wellbeing
👉 Engagement
👉 Human connection

During hospital stays, older patients can experience reduced mobility, low mood, confusion, or loss of confidence. Alongside excellent clinical care, introducing simple, structured recovery-focused activities — such as meaningful interaction, cognitive stimulation, and gentle engagement — can make a significant difference.

Research and practice continue to show that: ✔ Inactivity can lead to functional decline
✔ Delirium and low engagement can increase length of stay
✔ Early mobilisation and engagement support improved recovery

At Support Point Healthcare Services, we offer person-centred support designed to complement existing care by: ✨ Keeping older adults active and engaged
✨ Supporting cognitive stimulation and emotional wellbeing
✨ Enhancing confidence throughout recovery
✨ Supporting smoother transition and integration back into the community

This approach focuses on enhancing patient experience while supporting recovery outcomes in a holistic and practical way.

💬 Would this type of support be valuable within your setting?

📩 If you would like to find out more, please feel free to get in touch — we would be happy to connect and explore how we can work alongside your team.
