"If you've ever thought of trying mindfulness, then I doubt you can do much better than to try it with Ed! I did the 8 week introductory mindfulness course a few years ago and it was a wonderful experience which has enabled me to make mindfulness a part of my life ever since. Ed doesn't have a magic wand to make physical pain or mental suffering disappear, but he is a great teacher of a way of dealing with those things - a tool, if you will - which is profoundly helpful." Ever wonder what it'd be like to train in mindfulness with a specialist one-to-one teacher? This is from the latest google review at Mindfulness Sussex...

"Working one-to-one with Ed has been an incredibly positive experience in my life.
It’s given me a space to understand myself more clearly, helping me connect with my values, my patterns, and my sense of self, and supporting my growth in a way I don’t think I would have reached on my own.
I also don’t think I would have functioned through a particularly stressful period without it. It’s something I’ve relied on without even thinking, because of the skills I’ve developed through the one-to-one work."

"That's the real gift of mindfulness. Not peace. Not calm. Not any of the things on the brochure. Just this: the willingness to be in a room with yourself and not reach for the door."

This rings true.

It's the hardest thing I've ever practiced. And every morning I sit back down on the cushion and practice it again, because the version of me who kept running was functional, productive, and completely lost

If we can realise that the only time is now, and that memories of the past and ideas about the future exist only as mental events now, the more likely we are to unhook from identifying with unhelpful thoughts (and the feelings that accompany them) and experience peace. So much suffering comes from mistaking concepts for the sensory experiences they attempt to refer to. Or to put it simply, "the idea of your mother/a chair/X is not your mother/a chair/X"...

"Many people assume meditation is primarily about calming down, a way to escape stress. In reality, meditation is often mentally demanding work—more like taking your mind to the gym than relaxing. In one of our recent laboratory studies, we asked both novice and highly experienced meditators to meditate for 20 minutes and tracked their mental states. Even advanced meditators reported frequent mind-wandering during guided meditation, and unpleasant experiences like body discomfort or mental agitation outnumbered pleasant ones by nearly six to one. This is not a failure of meditation. It is practice working as intended...such moments provide opportunities to practice more adaptive responses to distress that people later implement in daily life."

Yes, absolutely, well put.

Meditation isn’t always calming. Discover why the difficulty of retreats may be exactly what helps strengthen your brain and improve long-term well-being.

Ed Halliwell from Mindfulness Sussex is leading a session on the benefits and challenges of One-to-one Mindfulness Coaching at the Sussex Mindfulness Centre conference on 15 May. Here's the workshop outline:

Mindfulness and compassion-based learning often happens in groups, and for good reason – following a tried-and-tested curriculum with others brings insight into the commonalities of human experience and offers mutual support as people develop a meditation practice. But has the emphasis on group training obscured the potential for a personalised approach? In one-to-one mindfulness sessions, meditation and inquiry are guided according to the unique needs of an individual moment-by-moment, creating a flexible, responsive, and intimately relational approach to learning. In this way, one-to-one sessions enable a compassionate connection that helps transformation happen. In this session, we will look at what one-to-one sessions can and can’t offer, what frameworks they can draw on, who can benefit, and how this emergent approach might evolve as the mindfulness field develops...
