Beyond the Uniform

Sometimes you meet someone and think, "You're going to make a real difference."

That's exactly what it’s like when you meet Jessie Bagnall at Thornhill House Care Home.

At just 19 years old, Jessie is already well on the way to achieving her lifelong ambition of becoming a paramedic. She's just completed her first year of training with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, learning the skills she'll one day use to save lives across our communities.

But when most students would be enjoying what little spare time they have, Jessie wanted to gain even more experience.

So, two months ago, she joined the team at Thornhill House.

It wasn't an unfamiliar place. Jessie's grandmother had lived at the home for around three years, so she already knew the warmth of the team and the difference they make to people's lives. When she was looking for additional work alongside her studies, she contacted Home Manager Christian Whiteley-Masonβ€”and she's never looked back.

Working in a care home isn't just about personal care. Every day Jessie is developing skills that will stay with her throughout her career: communicating with older people, recognising when someone isn't quite themselves, supporting residents to and from hospital, responding in emergencies, reassuring families and working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Those are lessons that simply can't be learnt from a textbook.

And for our residents? They have a caring, enthusiastic young woman who genuinely wants to make a difference.

It also says something about Thornhill House. Young people don't stay where they don't feel valued. Under Christian's leadership, the home has built a culture where people are encouraged to learn, grow and build careers.

One day, if you call for an ambulance in Barnsley, there's every chance Jessie will be on it.

Until then, we're incredibly proud that she's chosen to spend part of her journey caring for the residents of Thornhill House.

Good luck with the rest of your training, Jessie. Barnsley is lucky to have you.

Everyone has a life worth celebrating. πŸ’™

πŸŽΎπŸ–οΈ Two weeks packed full of fun at Thornhill House! πŸ–οΈπŸŽΎ

Life at Thornhill House Care Home is always busy, and over the next two weeks our residents have a fantastic programme of activities to look forward to!

We're serving up a Wimbledon Week with tennis games, table tennis, strawberries and cream, crafts and everyone's favourite... bingo! Then it's straight into our Beside the Seaside Week, complete with fishing games, knickerbocker glories, rubber duck races, seaside crafts and plenty more smiles along the way. πŸ“πŸŽΎπŸ¦πŸ¦†

At Thornhill House, activities are about so much more than keeping busy. They're about helping people stay active, maintaining independence, encouraging friendships and creating opportunities to laugh, reminisce and enjoy every day.

Spending time together, sharing experiences and having something to look forward to can make a real difference to wellbeing, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety while building confidence and bringing out the personalities of everyone who joins in.

If you know our residents, you'll know they're a wonderfully jolly bunch! There's always someone ready for a laugh, a bit of friendly competition and, of course, a good chat over a cup of tea. πŸ’™

It's all part of the warm, person-centred care that makes Thornhill House such a special place to live.

If you're looking for residential or learning disability care for yourself or a loved one, why not pop in and see what life at Thornhill House is really like? We'd love to welcome you.
