Our Family Support Team have Big and Small soft toys which they use with families when a child is struggling with being separated from their loved one.

These soft toys represent the adult and the child and are used in a therapeutic way to help the child recognise the bonds that link us to our loved ones even when we aren’t together in person.

The team work closely with each family, using these soft toys in the way that best suits their individual needs. 💚

Can you donate tombola prizes? 🏆

Our Fundraising Team have had a busy summer full of events and as a result we're running dangerously low on tombola prizes!

If you have any unwanted gifts, chocolates, toiletries, candles, games, biscuits or anything else that could make a good tombola prize, please contact our Fundraising Team on 01325 254 321 or email [email protected]. These items will need to be donated to the hospice on Woodlands Road, not to our shops. 💚

Please note, when you donate directly to the hospice instead of to our shops, we need to take your details to log your gift. We have Gift in Kind forms available in our reception areas which our volunteers can help you with if the Fundraising Team aren't available.

Today is International Day of Charity, which takes place on the 5th September every year and marks the anniversary of Mother Teresa's death.

In 1988, St Teresa's Hospice was lucky enough to receive a letter from Mother Teresa (who was later canonised). The original copy of this letter was thought to be lost to time - however it was handed in earlier this year by a formed CEO who used to pass it around groups while giving talks about the hospice.

St Teresa's Hospice has never been a religious organisation and has always been open to patients of all faiths. Our name was chosen after we received a generous donation in 1987 from the Carmelite Convent in Nunnery Lane, Darlington. Their gift made it possible for us to buy our first property - Harewood House, on Harewood Hill - where our original day centre took place. This marked a major milestone in the 40-year history of our hospice. 💚

The letter from Mother Teresa reads as follows:

'Many thanks for your letter of the 31st December and the cutting of a recent press item. I have noted that the St Teresa's Hospice will be for the terminally ill in the Darlington area and that the Carmelite Community in Nunnery Lane, Darlington contributed quite a good sum towards it.

I am sure the hospice will bring solace to many and I wish it every success and hope that many will come forward to make it a reality. Keep the love of Jesus ever burning in your heart as your strength and share it with others. God bless you, Mother Teresa.'
