Can we talk for a moment about nervous system regulation?

I'm seeing a lot of misinformation on the internet bashing nervous system regulation as suppression in disguise and this couldn't be further from the truth.

A regulated nervous system is one that has the capacity to hold the full range of the human emotional experience without becoming flooded to the point of dysfunction. And before the keyboard warriors jump on that statement, no I'm not judging 'function' by somebody's ability to work, but by their ability to carry on with their usual daily activities whilst also allowing themselves to experience whatever is coming up for them.

The truth is, our body needs to know what safety and relaxation feel like at our baseline to be able to metabolise the spikes in stress that are a natural part of life. When we're in a chronic state of fight or flight, our bodies lose touch with our baseline and that's when we're priming our bodies for physiological disease.

This is where Whole Person Healing is so powerful. Can I fix your trauma? Nope. And neither would try to. Can I give you the answers to your life's dilemmas? Although I could write a book on the breadth of life experience in my relatively short life, still...no. But can I remind your body what safety feels like so you have a baseline reference point again? Absolutely.

So if you're feeling on permanent hyper alert, struggling to sleep or waking up feeling exhausted despite 8 hours in bed, it's highly likely you're running on a dysregulated nervous system.

Transformation for our clients starts with transformation for ourselves.

You can only take someone to the level at which you've already met yourself. So if you're not practicing what you preach, your approach will produce surface level results at best.

Holistic therapy isn't a job, or even a vocation, it's a lifestyle, a way of being. If you're not living it, if you haven't tried and tested the advice you're giving, you can't be the evidence it's worked.

The Whole Person Healing Method isn't surface level mentorship. It's not a course, it's not a programme. It's profound personal and professional support that asks you where you want to be, where you want to take your clients, and gives you the safe space you need to explore how best to get there.

Comment WHOLE and we'll open up a conversation πŸ’œβœ¨

Well, I'm half way through my first week back after half term holidays and what a beautifully varied week it's been so far...

✨ Surgical aftercare for new and existing clients
✨ Reiki for nervous system regulation
✨ Massage therapy for my disability clients at NeuroActive

What a joy it is to have a wide and diverse toolkit I can draw on, to be creative and intuitive with solutions in the moment and give my clients the best possible outcomes.

But I can only tap into this creativity because I'm practicing what I preach and nurturing myself alongside my clients. This image might look peaceful, it's me meditating nestled among mountains next to the gentle trickle of running water. But what you don't see is the tears that came during that meditation because it's the first time I'd truly stopped in weeks and allowed myself fully to put everything down for a couple of days.

When you're a caregiver, not just for your clients but for your family too, when you shoulder the financial responsibility for a household and spin many other unseen plates alongside those things, taking care of yourself isn't optional, it's absolutely essential to your own balance and wellbeing. You can't pour from an empty cup. ClichΓ© but true.

So if you're a practitioner wanting to go deeper with yourself so you can show up better for your clients, trust me, I've been there and it's a continuing work in progress. But it's a hell of a lot easier with someone cheering you on. If mentoring is something you've wondered about for a while, comment WHOLE and let's have a real conversation about how to create balance, creativity and transformation in your life AND your practice.

Why is it we wait until our body screams at us before we do anything about it?

Think of your nervous system like a tamagochi (yup, showing my age now...)

It needs regular tending to. Not weekly, not monthly, daily.

Daily anchors and resets to keep cortisol and adrenaline at bay and keep us feeling balanced and centred.

And no, you don't have to meditate in the mountains to achieve that balance (although I personally love doing this 🫣). 10 minutes a day in greenery, listening to the birds singing is all it takes.

Well folks, that's a wrap. I'm now officially off until Monday 1st of June.

I won't be posting on social media, except perhaps pretty pictures of my adventures on stories, but marketing department is definitely closed for business for the week.

You can still reach me on WhatsApp if you need me, but obviously I'll be keeping business interactions minimal to give my system (and my body) an opportunity to reset.

Have a lovely bank holiday everyone and see you on the other side!

Therapists. If you've managed to make it to 10 years without a work related injury I applaud you πŸ‘

My latest minor ailment is a touch of tennis/golfers elbow, which we reckon could also be a result of my p**s weak shoulders 🀣 they might look strong but according to my physio, there's definitely still work to be done.

I've been avoiding it for years because life has taken over and my capacity has been very limited, but I might finally have to accept that I need to integrate a regular strengthening regime into my weekly schedule 🀦

So this is your reminder as well as my own, if you're in the bodywork industry, please make strengthening and mobility work a part of your self care.

Humbled enough today to admit I'm still learning how to make this work as sustainable as possible!

Your family and your clients need you to be able to show up fully. You can't do that from an empty cup.

If you were employed by someone, you'd expect weekends off, paid holidays and a wage that supports your lifestyle. Why do we accept less than this just because we're working for ourselves?

But time and time again I see therapists burning themselves out to barely make ends meet. We do it because we care, we do it because we love our work and our clients, but a calling that doesn't leave space for our own needs isn't sustainable.

And do you know what stops us?

The little voice in our head (or sometimes even the voices of people around us) that says "nobody will come if I stop working weekends" or "if I charge more, my clients won't be able to afford it".

I can tell you from personal experience that neither of those are universally true and the actual work is training our own nervous system to sit with the discomfort of taking action that creates change. Because once you can do that, you become unstoppable πŸ”₯

Comment LIFE if you're wanting to work towards more balance in your practice but you're not sure where to start.

What a fulfilling morning. The most heart warming feedback I've had in a little while:

"It's so good to feel like my arm is part of me again"

This was from a client who had a stroke that left him with left sided weakness and altered sensation in his upper limb. This is very common with acquired brain injuries and something I've noticed over the years is that when clients feel disconnected from their body, there's a sense of real loss. And what does loss lead to...grief of course.

So even where function is limited, helping someone to reconnect with a part of their body that has long felt disconnected is a big deal, not just for helping the brain to make new connections, but as a major contributing factor to identity.

Massage therapy is more than treating tight muscles, it's using neuroplasticity to help the brain make connections, it's stimulating the nervous system, it's improving sensation and it's also lifting mood and also helping people reconnect with themselves.

If you or someone you know has had an acquired brain injury, don't lose hope. Sometimes function and sensation improve years after the injury, but sometimes it just needs the right input to get things going.

I want to talk about relationships today.

My clients that know me well, know that when I go digging into your life history, you best bet I want ALL OF IT 🀣 and not from some busybody curiosity, but because relationships make up an enormous part of our wellbeing, and I'm not just talking about our romantic relationships. How we relate to others tells us a LOT about ourselves...

So do you want to know one of the biggest shifts I’ve made in recent years?

Realising that being a caring person and being an over-functioning person are not the same thing.

For years I thought love looked like:

– anticipating everyone’s needs
– fixing problems before they arose
– carrying emotional weight without being asked
– staying hyper-aware of everyone around me

I called it being thoughtful.

Sometimes it was.

Sometimes it was anxiety wearing a very convincing disguise.

Because caring for people is healthy.

Believing everything rests on your shoulders is exhausting.

There’s a big difference.

Thankfully, I did the work and I've learned to stay in my own lane and only carry my own s*** but this took a lot of practice and sometimes setting boundaries still feels clunky and awkward. But your inner peace is so worth it.

Did anyone else have to learn that one the hard way? And what are you doing differently now?πŸ‘‡

PS. My best mate found this absolute corker in the back catalogue of her camera reel yesterday and it's too hilarious not to share 🀣

Stop. Take a breath. What's happening right now, in this moment? Are you essentially okay? Even if there are uncomfortable feelings under the surface?

What can you see?

What can you hear?

What can you feel?

Is it possible in this moment to connect with something that feels good?

If not, be with what is there as you go about your day.

If so, stop if you can, and be with that good feeling, identify where you feel it in your body and imagine that wonderful feeling becoming a permanent part of you.

This is the practice of taking in the good. It short circuits our overthinking mind and brings us back into the present, the only place where life actually happens.

Give it a try and tell me in the comments what you noticed β˜ΊοΈπŸ™
