Feeling calm doesn’t mean your body has no sensations.
It means you can recognise them and still know you’re safe.
When stress hormones like adrenaline are released, your body does exactly what it was designed to do — preparing you to fight, flee or freeze in response to a perceived threat.
These responses are completely normal. We need them. We just don’t want our brain and body triggering them too often — or staying in that protective state when we don’t actually need to be there.
The challenge is that our protective brain doesn’t only respond to actual danger. The same response can be triggered by a sudden noise, a worrying thought, pressure, uncertainty, something we imagine might happen — or simply too much ‘stuff’ building up over time.
When you understand how your brain and nervous system work, those sensations start to make much more sense.
You can recognise them for what they are: a protective response that’s trying to help — even when it isn’t actually helpful.
And that understanding can make a real difference. Instead of becoming anxious about the sensations themselves, you can recognise what’s happening, helping your mind and nervous system settle so you can move forward feeling calmer, steadier and more in control.
Understanding what’s going on in our minds really can change everything.
And if you’d like some support to spend less time in fight, flight or freeze and more time feeling calm, safe and in control, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help. You’re always welcome to get in touch.
