A dementia-friendly home does not need to feel clinical.
Photos, favourite ornaments, meaningful trinkets and familiar furniture can all help someone feel connected to their life story and sense of self.
But too much clutter can sometimes make it harder to find things, move safely or feel calm.
Try to keep walkways clear, remove loose rugs if they are a trip risk, and make everyday spaces simple to use.
A good question to ask is:
Does this help my loved one feel safe, comfortable or connected?
If it does, keep it. If it makes life harder, it may be worth simplifying.
At Home Instead, we believe dementia support should protect both safety and personality.
