Jennah, a post graduate researcher at Bournemouth University within the Centre for Midwifery and Women's Health is embarking on research focussing on dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER), a breastfeeding condition that causes intense negative emotions before or during milk ejection (ethics approval ID: 69167). Lack of awareness of D-MER has resulted in misdiagnosis with postnatal depression, early breastfeeding cessation and lower maternal self-efficacy.

"I experienced D-MER while breastfeeding both my first child back in 2014 and again, with my son in 2019 experiencing the condition for a total of 48 months and previously wrote about this in a blog for the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and more recently, in the Journal of Human Lactation. These experiences inspired my research with the aim of improving understanding and raising awareness of D-MER for those affected.

My current study is the first to investigate whether there is a relationship between stress and the emotional experience of the human milk ejection reflex by exploring the underlying hormonal mechanisms. The study includes both those who experience D-MER and those who do not, allowing a better understanding of the full range of milk ejection emotional experiences.

The study is open to participants across the UK and can be completed entirely from home."
