Your headaches are not always about water.

So many of my lovely ladies come to me convinced they just need to drink more, sleep more, do more. And those things matter. But the tension headache that sits behind your eyes by 3pm is often your nervous system waving a white flag after a full day of holding everything together.

The brain reflex sits on the top of your big toe. As a Reflexologist, it is one of the first points I reach for when someone tells me their mind simply will not switch off.

Here is how to work it at home...

Use your thumb to apply firm, steady pressure to the top of your big toe. Work in small circular motions. Keep going for about a minute. As you do, slow your breathing right down. Long breath in, longer breath out.

That is it. One point. One minute. A few deep breaths.

It will not fix a chaotic week. But it gives your overthinking mind a moment to land, and sometimes that is exactly what your head has been asking for.

Save this for the next time your body simply will not switch off 🤍

The adrenals are your stress glands. Spend all day on high alert... rushing, holding it all together, bracing for the next thing... and they keep pumping out cortisol while your body stays stuck in fight or flight.

Working this one point on the foot sends the signal that it is safe to come down. It eases the tension you have been carrying without even noticing, takes the edge off the aches that come with it, and helps you feel calm again. 😮‍💨

4 self massage techniques that will help you take your first proper breath all day

You have been on edge since the second your eyes opened.

Shoulders up. Jaw tight. Breath shallow without you even noticing.

Then you finally sit down... and realise you have not properly exhaled all day.

This is for that moment. Rest one foot on your opposite knee and work through these slowly. Use your favourite foot cream or a little oil first... something that smells calming so the whole thing feels like a proper wind down.

1. Lung stretch... press both thumbs into the ball of your foot, just under the toes, and gently open outwards as you breathe out. This is the chest and lung area, so let your breath lead it.

2. Criss cross... hold each side of your foot and move your hands back and forth in opposite directions, like you are gently wringing out the tension.

3. Knuckle knead... make a soft fist and knead your knuckles slowly into the pad just under your toes, then turn and slowly drag them down to the heel.

4. Effleurage... finish with long slow strokes from toes to heel, soothing everything back down.

You are not trying to fix anything... you are telling your body it is finally safe to let go.

As a Reflexologist of 19 years, this is the work I see settle women the most.

Four different symptoms… one thing sitting underneath them all.

Waking up wrecked after a full night’s sleep. Headaches that arrive like clockwork every month. Feeling wired and shattered at the same time. Bloating that won’t budge no matter what you cut out.

They look completely unrelated. They’re not.

When your nervous system has been stuck in fight or flight for months… sometimes years… your body quietly stops prioritising the things that keep you feeling well. It’s too busy bracing for the next thing.

Your sleep stops being restorative. You’re asleep, but your body never fully drops into repair mode… so you wake up feeling like you never went to bed.

Your digestion slows right down. Rest and digest only switches on when your body feels safe… so when you’re running on stress, food just sits there, gas builds, and the bloating has nothing to do with the carbs.

Your pain threshold drops. Add the natural hormone dip before your period on top of that, and those monthly headaches have the perfect conditions to take hold.

Then there’s the wired but tired feeling… that’s stress hormones flooding your system while your tank is completely empty. It’s real. It has a name. It’s nervous system dysregulation.

Here’s the part no one tells you… you can’t push your way out of this. You don’t calm a stressed nervous system by trying harder or being more disciplined. You calm it by giving your body the signal that it’s finally safe to switch off.

The adrenal reflex. A small point on the sole of your foot that connects directly to your stress glands. Work it the right way... and your body gets the message that it is safe to stop flooding itself with cortisol.
