We were delighted to welcome our newest committee member, Tarndeep Vaid, to our July committee meeting in Bolsover last month. So, we thought we'd catch up with him to find out why he joined the LPC and what he's hoping to contribute during his tenure. Over to you Tarndeep!

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗯𝘆𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗣𝗖 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿?
Running my own pharmacy for nearly three years, and working as an independent prescriber, has given me a first-hand view of the gap between what contractors are being asked to deliver and the support and funding structures actually in place. I wanted a direct route to represent that reality at LPC level rather than just raising it locally.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿?
Ensuring we advise that decisions are grounded in what's actually happening on the ground for contractors - funding pressures, workforce shortages, and the sustainability of newer services - rather than policy discussions that lose touch with day-to-day

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗲?
I'd like to support to see tangible progress on contractor funding adequacy and workforce sustainability, and to help embed independent prescribing and clinical services in a way that's actually deliverable for pharmacies of our size, not just larger multiples.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀?
I own and run a community pharmacy, have worked as a locum, and practise as an independent prescriber, so I see the sector from several angles - owner, frontline clinician, tutor and someone invested in the progression of our profession. That range means I can speak credibly to the practical impact of decisions across different pharmacy models.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮/𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁?
Independent prescribing - I think it's where community pharmacy has the clearest opportunity to take on more clinical responsibility and relieve pressure elsewhere in the system, but only if the funding and infrastructure genuinely keep pace with what's being asked of contractors.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝘂 𝗩𝗮𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲

To receive supplies of childhood flu vaccines ahead of the 1st October 2026 service commencement date, you must have registered to provide the Childhood Flu Vaccination Service via MYS by 𝟭𝟭.𝟱𝟵𝗽𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝟯𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

You must use the NHS Business Services Authority’s Manage Your Service (MYS) portal to register to provide the 2026/27 Childhood Flu Vaccination.

If you provided the Childhood Flu Vaccination Service in 2025/26, you are required to re-register if they intend to provide the service in 2026/27.

Pharmacy owners can register after 31st August 2026, however, it is not guaranteed you will receive childhood flu vaccine in time for the Childhood Flu Vaccination Service commencement date.

The final deadline to register to provide the Childhood Flu Vaccination Service in 2026/27 is 11.59pm on 30th November 2026.

The Hub+ Derbyshire has provided some funding for Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) support to pharmacists working in Derbyshire who would like to undertake the Independent Prescribing (IP) Course.

Places are still available. If you are a pharmacist planning to undertake the IP course and need support finding a DPP, or if you are interested in becoming a DPP for a student IP pharmacist, please contact [email protected] by Thursday 30th July.

Please note that payment for DPP support is £4,500 per student.

𝗘𝗣𝗦 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀

Some community pharmacies are experiencing difficulties ordering EPS dispensing tokens due to issues with authorised signatory approval and, in some cases, pharmacy accounts incorrectly showing as inactive.

NHSE and PCSE are aware of the issue and are working on a resolution.

Advice for pharmacies from the ICB is as follows:

∙ If a pharmacy account is showing as inactive, the pharmacy should contact PCSE Support using the email address previously used to access their PCSE account. PCSE has been advised to accept this as sufficient evidence to reactivate the account without requiring an authorised signatory.

∙ If a pharmacy is using a different email address and is asked for authorised signatory approval, they should email [email protected] with evidence that they have attempted to place an order. NHSE will provide authorisation where required.

∙ For urgent dispensing token requirements, pharmacies should email [email protected] with evidence of their attempted order. NHSE will arrange an urgent supply where appropriate.

This is a known national issue affecting some pharmacy accounts. Pharmacies should follow the above process while NHSE and PCSE continue to implement system fixes.

𝗣𝗤𝗦: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻

Pharmacy owners are now able to make a claim for an Aspiration payment for the Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS) 2026/27 on the NHS Business Services Authority’s Manage Your Service (MYS) portal.

The Aspiration payment is optional; if you do not want to claim it, it will not impact on your ability to claim a PQS payment during the declaration period. There is also no requirement to have claimed for a previous PQS to claim an Aspiration payment for PQS 2026/27.

If you wish to claim for an Aspiration payment, you should review the requirements of the PQS 2026/27 here https://cpe.org.uk/quality-and-regulations/pharmacy-quality-scheme/, and decide which domains you intend to meet when you make their PQS declaration (between 9am on 1st February and 11.59pm on 26th February 2027) and declare this on the MYS portal.

If you wish to claim an Aspiration payment, you must do so between 𝟵𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟯𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟭.𝟱𝟵𝗽𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

Pharmacy owners will be paid their Aspiration payment on 1st September 2026.

Next in the hot seat for our ‘𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀’ feature is our chair, Eaton. Pharmacist and procurement manager with Dean & Smedley, Ben has been a member of the committee for 20 years and was recently voted in for a second round of chairmanship after taking on the role a year ago. Over to you Ben!

“Derbyshire born & bred, I was born in Swadlincote and my family moved to Etwall when I was 2. Being a pharmacist wasn't on my radar when I was growing up; I wanted to be a vet until I realised I wasn’t clever enough! I then thought about joining the Air Force – I love fast jets! – like many of my family but, since I’m short-sighted, becoming a fighter pilot was also never going to happen. So, when I was taken on lunch covers by one of the Dean & Smedley relief pharmacists, I got an introduction to pharmacy and discovered I liked it and, consequently, applied to Brighton University to study Pharmacy.

I spent four years in Brighton and during my holidays I worked for Dean & Smedley in Mackworth. I graduated in 1999 and went on to complete my pre-reg at Dean & Smedley in Swadlincote. In December 2000, I was promoted to manager and spent the next 20 years there.

I helped to set up a locality minor ailments service which, interestingly, we named Pharmacy First. This was one of first pharmacy-led INR services and at one point we were monitoring over 200 patients. I still remember the queues for headlice treatment!

When Covid hit, I had this overwhelming urge to help as much as I could so, every weekend, I worked at the arena vaccinating and helping with admin. I loved it and think this is one of the reasons why I’m so passionate about vaccinations and the service we offer in community pharmacy.

In 2020, I moved to a head office role to work as a relief pharmacist. This gave me the opportunity to solve issues whenever they arose and become a pharmacist again. Now I’m back in branch in Swadlincote but I still have a head office role as procurement manager. I run the PMR system too and I’m clinical lead for flu, Covid and INR testing, something I really enjoy.

Outside of work I’m married to Lisa and we have two children, Josh and Olivia. You’ll be pleased to learn that I did finally get up in the air several years ago. Not as a fighter pilot but in the hot seat as a glider pilot! I also used to play the trumpet in local bands, but my big passion was running. I was lucky enough to take part in the London marathon in 2018 for Crohn’s & Colitis UK and during Covid I set myself the challenge of running 14 half marathons – one a month plus a couple extra! – to raise money for Macmillan. That little challenge led to me being given the unique opportunity to carry the torch for the Commonwealth Games which was great fun. I’ve since retired from running and my current hobbies are attending as many Leicester Tigers and England rugby matches as I can as well as continuing my never-ending role as Dad’s Taxi!”

Community Pharmacy England is hosting a free webinar on the regulatory provisions and issues around pharmacy core and supplementary opening hours on 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟳.𝟯𝟬-𝟵𝗽𝗺.

The session will explain the current requirements, notifications and applications, market entry issues around opening hours, explain how ICBs and NHS Resolution are assessing applications/appeals, and provide practical guidance on the evidence to include with applications.
