Sometimes the biggest lessons come from the smallest people. 🤍
Tonight, Emelia is lying in bed, talking to me about everything that is going on.
She knows I’ve been speaking to solicitors. She’s thinking about making friends. She’s worrying about where she’ll have lunch. She doesn’t even know where the toilet is yet.
And in amongst all of that excitement is uncertainty.
A new home.
A new school.
A new chapter.
A completely different life.
As a parent, there are conversations you desperately want to shield your children from. But when something is a daily reality, especially during the summer holidays when there is nowhere to escape the conversations, sometimes all you can do is create a safe space for them to talk.
To listen.
To let them say, “I’m worried about this.”
“I don’t understand that.”
“What happens if…?”
And actually hear them.
There will be people who see me as the villain in this chapter.
Maybe they always will.
But sometimes we have to make incredibly difficult decisions and take our children away from what they know — not because we want to hurt anyone, but because sometimes children need the opportunity to heal, and sometimes we need the opportunity to heal too.
That doesn’t make it easy.
It doesn’t mean there isn’t grief.
It doesn’t mean there aren’t moments of doubt, guilt and fear.
It just means choosing to believe that there can be something healthier on the other side of all of this.
So tonight, I’m listening to my little girl worry about lunch and toilets and making friends… and somehow she reminds me that children don’t need us to have every answer.
They need us to listen.
They need us to reassure them.
They need us to let them feel what they feel.
And they need us to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Here’s to a new chapter. 🌊
To new places.
New friendships.
New memories.
New beginnings.
And to the lessons my children continue to teach me every single day.
Sometimes, we think we’re the ones raising them… but they’re quietly teaching us how to live too. 🤍
