Hand hygiene myth: Providing you use soap, it does not matter how long you wash your hands for.

The NHS recommends 20 seconds at a minimum to wash your hands effectively. Some may sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice, or the chorus to ‘Yellow Submarine’ also works.

Why 20 seconds? That is the average time it takes to eliminate any harmful bacteria and viruses on the hands, with enough time to thoroughly clean the areas between the fingers.
