How has A-level results day been?
You may have been celebrating, commiserating, or just feeling a bit numb and lost.
I remember collecting my exam results, frantically searching for my name, and then the chill of disbelief when I realised I was staring at C's and U's.
But here's the thing I want you to know. I am now 46 years old and I rebuilt my life a few years ago after living in an abusive marriage. I bought a house, and I raise my child on my own. I did not need A levels to make that happen.
I write books - important books that touch people. People come to tell me how much my books have helped them. That is what success means to me. Not exam results on some bit of paper that I will never look at again. Connection, compassion, doing good work, being a good authentic person. That's how I measure my worth.
I read and I go to the theatre and I immerse myself in some beautiful stories and plays. I also read palms (I have a Diploma in Chirology) and I love being able to work out who people are just from their hands. I have a therapy business where I change lives and a Law Degree that pays the mortgage. I did not need A levels for any of these things.
Today is one day in the rest of your life. Just one day.
There will be so many chances to shine.
Let me ask you what you think success means. Is it a bit of paper with a few letters on? What will that tell me about you and who you are inside - your hopes, your fears, your dreams? Nothing. It will tell me nothing.
Success is not measured in grades. YOU are not defined by grades.
Success is being a decent person, and living a life that is beautiful. And you don't need a piece of paper to do that.
You're enough just as you are.
