New research on Endometriosis 🧬
The largest study to date on the genetic basis of endometriosis has been conducted by researchers from Oxford University along with 25 other research teams across the world.
The meta-analysis compared the genomes of 60,674 people with endometriosis compared to 701,926 controls. The study identified 42 genome-wide significant loci that increased risk of endometriosis. Many of these genes played a role in regulating expression and methylation of genes in the endometrium, as well as pain perception/maintenance.
The study also found a shared genetic basis between endometriosis and other pain conditions such as migraine, and back pain.
The identification of genes involved in the development of endometriosis are important for finding new treatments and facilitating early symptomatic intervention.
