Colleagues who play together, stay together 🤝

Last week, we swapped the office for a retro Sports Day at our staff summer gathering, enjoying a gloriously sunny afternoon of classic summer sports activities – all with a Songbird twist!

Highlights include Liquiwax skittles, mini-wax and spoon races, Massage Wax coconut shy, and postal-sack races.
(Don’t worry, no Massage Waxes were harmed in the making of this. They were all empty tubs.)

And for prizes, everyone received some beautiful wildflower seed bombs to sow at home.

Our entire product range is nut-free!

If you’ve been purchasing from us for years, you’ll probably remember that our Massage Waxes used to contain almond oil. However, we changed our formulation back in 2024 to remove the almond oil, allowing those with nut allergies to enjoy all of our products.

So, if you’re needing a nut-free product, you can enjoy all the scents across our entire range, and be safe in the knowledge that all of our products – be it Massage Wax, Reflexology Wax, Fascial Release Wax, Liquiwax, or Balms – have been created without nut oils.

🐝 Bees in the news: We were saddened to read a recent article about bumblebees struggling in UK heatwaves.

“UK species are adapted to our historically cooler climate… But in a heatwave their muscles generate more heat, while their thick coats and round bodies make it harder to cool down… Once air temperatures reach around 28C to 32C, UK bumblebees can start to struggle to fly without overheating… Once their internal body temperature is much above 40C, they start keeling over.”

A sobering reminder that changes in climate have far-reaching consequences for even the tiniest creatures.

However, the article shared some great tips for giving bees a helping hand:

🌼 Plant some native wildflowers in whatever space you have – even just a small pot on a doorstep or windowsill will help. We loved the quote: “Your flowerpot is a service station… It’s somewhere to rest, refuel and carry on.”

⛲ If you have the space for it, creating a pond – no matter how small – can help.

🪷 Flowers growing near water tend to produce nectar with more moisture in it. Wetter nectar can help make colonies more resilient in hot weather.

🌳 Planting dense shrubs gives bumblebees places to escape the heat of the sun, and can allow them to move between flowers through cooler patches of air.

Personally, we love our wildflower patch outside our office. It’s such an easy, pretty and maintenance-free way of increasing plant biodiversity. And the bees seem to love them, too!

So zesty, it makes your mouth water!

Our Zest blend is a beautifully refreshing combination of Lime and Mandarin essential oils. When we manufacture this one, we all have an extra little spring in our steps because it fills the air with such an uplifting aroma. We’ve even had customers tell us it happily reminds them of childhood sweets!

Its scent has plenty of zing, but it’s also one of our gentler blends. It was originally developed in conjunction with the Iris Cancer Charity, and has been formulated without Arnica and a lower essential oil content to make it as mild as possible for those with compromised immune systems.

Celebrating Plastic Free July! ♻

Plastic Free July is a growing global movement that encourages people to cut down on single-use plastics throughout the month of July. Inspiring millions of people each year, these small, sustainable actions help reduce plastic waste and pollution, and collectively add up to a significant positive impact.

We’ve been taking a moment to reflect on our journey towards (mostly) plastic-free packaging. We dug out some examples of our old packaging to show our newer team members, and it’s been a fun reminder of how we’ve developed over the last few years.

We began with plastic pots for all of our products for many years, before experimenting with the idea of our cardboard EcoTubs. The first generation of EcoTubs (the brown pot pictured) was inspired by a small container of ice cream bought at the zoo, believe it or not! We were excited to launch this brand new style of packaging into the massage world, and were thrilled that many of you loved the idea of cardboard tubs too.

After a number of years of development and refinement, we later launched our second generation of EcoTub – with its sturdier structure and beautiful scenic blue design, while still being recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. We now offer this style of packaging in three different sizes across our ranges. And we switched to glass containers for our smallest 20g size pots, too.

We also care about the recyclability of all components of the delivery packaging you receive from us. From the paper parcel tape to the biodegradable corn starch packing chips, we’re proud to say we carefully consider sustainability in all forms of our packaging.

We’re not exclusively plastic-free, as we recognise that many therapists need their Massage Waxes to be in waterproof containers (for example, if working pool-side). But we’re pleased to give you all the choice.

There’s been some amazing advancements in packaging technology in recent years, with new ideas surfacing regularly. So, we remain optimistic for increasingly sustainable innovations for generations to come. Here's to the future!

We love this beautiful image of a patch of tree lichen that our Maya photographed here in Ditcheat earlier this week. Our business may be in Massage Wax, but we’re all a bunch of nature-lovers here!

Lichen might look like a single plant, but it’s actually a tiny ecosystem; a remarkable symbiotic partnership between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner (usually algae).

Here are some of our favourite (nerdy) lichen facts:

🌿 There are tens of thousands of species of lichen, and they can grow almost everywhere; from tropical rainforests, to deserts, and the Arctic.

🌿 Lichens are an important food source for wildlife, and birds use lichens to build nests.

🌿 They can survive extreme drought by becoming dormant, then quickly spring back to life when they get wet again.

🌿 They've even survived in space during experiments outside spacecraft!

🌿 Some lichens have a long history of use in perfumery, including the beautifully scented oakmoss (although this is less common nowadays).

🌿 For centuries, people have extracted purple, red and brown dyes from certain lichens to colour wool and fabrics.

🌿 Because many species grow very slowly, some lichens are centuries old. In fact, the oldest living lichen is estimated to be 8,600 years old.

Next time you spot a patch of lichen, take a closer look. You'll discover an amazing miniature world of colours, textures, and tiny forests in their own right.
