Augustinian Care, St George’s Park is a supportive care community offering care homes, assisted living, and independent retirement living with domiciliary care. Augustine, Mercy of Jesus, were founded 1842 in Bruges by Canon Peter John Mayes, he was a great advocate of the mentally ill. He traveled extensively to study their treatment and care, pioneering more human treatment for them than was t

he norm at that time. He believed in the value of having Sisters dedicated to the care of the sick and he took a group of Sisters from Bruges to Burgess Hill. Louis Mayes in England, Canon Peter met Cardinal Wiseman and Bishop Grant of Southwark who asked him to found a house in England for the care of the sick – St. George’s Retreat. In consequence Canon Peter arrived at Burgess Hill from Bruges on 5th October 1856 and Sr. Raphael was appointed Superioress, by this time Canon Mayes had bought an area of around 200 acres in Sussex borrowing the money from Bruges which had to be paid back over the years. With labour and building materials being brought from Belgium the construction of St George’s retreat began in 1867. It was officially opened on the feast of St. Joseph in 1868. The name was chosen in memory of the opening in July 1848 of St. George’s Cathedral in Southwark, the first Catholic Cathedral in England since the reformation and after the restoration of the hierarchy. The first patients, men and women arrived in 1869. Canon Peter Mayes liked to call St. George’s Retreat God’s Hotel. Then building work continued until the main building was completed in 1877 in which year Canon Peter Mayes died. Possibly owing to the distance involved in those years Burgess Hill became independent of Bruges. George’s being the Mother House, where the new care village and care homes have been established.

A daughter wrote to us about her mum’s time at St Rita’s. She’d not been eating properly for some time. Once she was here, with a view over the fields where the cattle and calves graze, she started eating again.

Small things, but they’re often the ones families remember most.

It is with the greatest sadness that we inform you that Sister Mary Thomas MBE passed away on 1 August.

Sister Thomas was an inspiration to so many people across Augustinian Care and St George’s Park. She will be greatly missed by the Sisters, staff, residents, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

She dedicated her life to caring for others and did so with dignity, compassion, humour, faith, and vision. Her commitment to improving the lives of older people and her unwavering determination were instrumental in shaping St George’s Park into the thriving community it is today.

Her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched and the community she helped create.

Sister Thomas will be deeply missed by us all.

Rest in Peace, Sister Thomas, and thank you for everything you have done.

Last month, we celebrated the Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day in our Art Club. Everyone designed and coloured their own hat pictures, choosing bright colours and adding their own personal touches.

After a delicious BBQ from our catering team, the fun continued with residents trying on a variety of fancy hats, bringing even more smiles to the afternoon.

It’s these small, joyful moments that make Augustinian Care special.

3 Reasons why we love Louise - the Farm Manager.
1. The way she talks about the cattle, you'd think she was talking about family. "They're my girls," she told us, and she meant every word.
2. She showed us the shed, checked on the herd, and talked us through calving season, the early starts and long nights most people never see. ANH cattle have picked up a few prizes along the way this year and are gearing up for more.
3. Louise loves bringing residents out to meet the animals. She wants people to see farming up close and feel how calm it is, to know there's a whole living world right on their doorstep.

Now that's what turns a care home into a home. Not just good care, but life carrying on around you.
If you'd like to see it for yourself, we'd love to show you around. Click the link in our bio

The story of Augustinian Care didn’t begin in Burgess Hill. It started in Belgium more than 100years ago, with Canon Peter John Maes and the Augustinian Sisters. They believed people deserved to be cared for with real dignity, whatever life had taken from them.

That belief is the reason we do what we do, every single day.

Now this is very important because when you’re looking for care for someone you love, you’re not just choosing a place. You’re choosing the values behind the people who’ll look after them.

When your loved one comes to us, they don’t lose their story. They become part of ours, one that’s been growing for generations and keeps going even as we speak.

YOU are part of that story, YOU are part of its history.

If you’d like to know who we really are, we’d love to show you. Click the link in our bio or send a DM

Booking enquiries for the Pink Ladies are now open. 💅🎶😁.

Our team went all in for the Grease-themed BBQ last week with full costumes, full attitude, full commitment to the bit. The T-Birds even showed up.

If you’re planning a 1950s diner night and need backup dancers, we know some staff who might be available (subject to them finishing their shift first).

This is just one small taste of the fun we get up to at Augustinian Care. Life here is full of moments like this.

Come and see for yourself.
