We can all become overwhelmed in the busy, stressful lives we lead, even when we genuinely enjoy our work.
Taking just a few moments during your day to give your senses something pleasant—whether that's noticing nature, listening to birdsong, feeling the warmth of the sun, or enjoying the smell of fresh coffee—can help calm the amygdala, the part of the brain involved in our stress response.
As your brain recognises these moments of safety and calm, it helps reduce stress and overwhelm. It also encourages the release of feel-good chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, while helping to lower cortisol, your body's main stress hormone.
These small moments act like a reset button, helping to regulate your nervous system so you can return to your day feeling calmer, clearer and better able to cope.
Your nervous system responds best when you notice the early signs that you need a pause, rather than waiting until you're overwhelmed, stressed and running on empty. Small, regular resets are often far more effective than trying to recover in the evening or weekend's once you've already reached your limit.
I support clients to find simple, practical ways to build these small resets into their daily routines, helping them feel calmer, more in control and better able to cope with life's demands.
