For women living with diabetes, planning a pregnancy can make a real difference to both maternal and baby's health. Taking steps such as reviewing medications, taking 5 mg folic acid, and achieving recommended blood glucose targets before pregnancy can help reduce the risk of complications.

If you or someone you know is living with diabetes and may become pregnant, speak to your diabetes or healthcare team as early as possible.

We’re incredibly proud that the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Diabetic Eye Screening Programme has been shortlisted for a Diabetes Nursing Excellence Award. 🎉

This nomination recognises our team’s commitment to improving access to diabetic eye screening for some of the most underserved communities across our region.

Through community pop-up clinics, GP partnerships, and dedicated accessible screening sessions, we’ve helped re-engage people who had not attended screening for many years — in some cases over a decade. By bringing services closer to home and adapting care around individual needs, we’ve supported earlier detection of diabetic eye disease and helped reduce health inequalities.

We’re especially proud of our work supporting people with learning disabilities and vulnerable groups, ensuring everyone has access to vital diabetes care in a way that feels safe, inclusive, and accessible.

Congratulations to the team on this fantastic achievement! 👏

Worksop residents urged to attend vital diabetic eye screening event ⬇️

People living with diabetes in Worksop are being encouraged to attend a special “Super Saturday” diabetic eye screening event, taking place at Worksop Library on Saturday 28 February, from 9.30am to 3pm.

The event is being organised by the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Diabetic Eye Screening Programme to help improve attendance among local patients who may have missed their regular appointments. More than 100 people in the area have not attended their annual screening for three years or more.

Diabetic eye screening is a free NHS service offered to people aged 12 and over who have diabetes. It checks for early signs of diabetic retinopathy - a condition that can damage the blood vessels at the back of the eye and, if left untreated, can lead to sight loss.

In the early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Many people do not notice any changes to their vision until damage has already occurred. Regular screening allows problems to be detected early, when treatment is most effective.

All eligible patients will receive a yellow invitation letter with details of their appointment.

Jemima Beaumont, Failsafe and Engagement Lead for the Doncaster & Bassetlaw Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, said: “Diabetic eye screening is one of the most important ways we can protect people’s sight. It’s quick, painless, and could prevent serious vision problems in the future. We know life gets busy and appointments can be missed, which is why events like this are so important. We’d really encourage anyone who’s been putting it off to come along and get checked.”

Patients who cannot attend their allocated appointment time are encouraged not to worry. They can either contact the screening team in advance or attend on the day and be seen where possible.

People can rearrange their appointment by calling 01302 642596 or emailing [email protected]

Walk-in patients are welcome between 9.30am and 3pm, and the team will do their best to accommodate everyone.

The screening programme hopes the event will help more people access this vital service and reduce the risk of avoidable sight loss across the community.

We’re delighted to see our specialist diabetic eye screening morning for patients with Learning Disabilities being shared across the local community.✨

This quiet, calm and welcoming session was created to support patients who may find a traditional clinic environment challenging. By offering a relaxed atmosphere, longer appointment times and clear communication, we aimed to make screening a positive and accessible experience for everyone 🤝

Providing equal access to eye screening is vital in reducing health inequalities and protecting sight for people living with diabetes across our community 🌍

If you, a family member or someone you care for has a Learning Disability or Autism and would benefit from extra support with diabetic eye screening, please give us a call 📞 01302 642596/642597.

A DEDICATED screening day designed specifically for patients with learning disabilities helped to remove barriers to care and create a “quiet, calm and welcoming” experience for those attending.

💙👁 We're incredibly proud to share that our Failsafe & Engagement Lead, Jemima Beaumont won the "Health Equality Champion" award at this years DBTH Star Awards Ceremony.

Jemima has worked tirelessly to ensure that patients have equal access to the care that they need. She have worked hard to make sure letters and correspondence reach patients in the right language and has arranged for clinics to be held in areas which have low uptake of screening due to language barriers, learning disabilities and travel issues.

The team received commendation for their outstanding work in improving access to care for patients who face language, learning, or travel barriers — ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to protect their sight.

Well done to Jemima and the team at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Diabetic Eye Screening!

We are so proud to share that our Screener Photographer, Richard Thompson was recognised as DBTH's Patient Champion at this years Star Awards Ceremony.

Unfortunately Richard could not attend on the night, so his colleague and close friend Amanda was extremely proud to accept the award on behalf of Richard.

Richard is always making his patients feel relaxed, welcomed and in safe hands. Many patients specifically ask for him for return appointments as they have such a good experience. Richard is fantastic with adult patients and young patients alike and is described as a gentle soul and a credit to DBTH.

Well done Richard!
